Twin pronged problem of financing new construction and purchasing mortgages because of the liquidity squeeze due to higher interest rates was behind their recommendation to cut our losses now before that portion of the portfolio drags the rest of it down. Real estate is going to take a huge hit next year, and the ripple through the rest of the economy is going to be massive.
We're talking property foreclosures, declining valuations, massive defaults, oversupply of unleased commercial grade office space, loss of revenue from loans off poorly performing land acquisitions (no new construction because builders can't get financed) and a variety of other problems ancillary to inability of existing homeowners to refinance, make purchases or even sell to new 1st time homebuyers.
