His father passed away in June.

It could be something as simple as he wanted to opt out too with all these changes happening in 2020.

His heart really didn’t seem to be in it, going back to the end of last year. He’s had a long coaching career and presumably can retire if he wants. I wish him the best.

As a native Vicksburger and fan of the Hopson family, I may be prejudiced but think he was a good coach. No disrespect to USM, but they need moolah to attract good assistants. They have had a lot of good football coaches who went to better jobs. At one time, USM was a desirable job for a guy to make his mark and move up. Now they have competition from the USA's, the Troys, the UAB's the ULL's that they seemingly didn't have before. They still get some diamonds in the rough though. I'd love to have Tim Jones at State, for example. Hop will land on his feet if he's still interested in coaching, maybe at a lower echelon as a HC or an assistant at P5
