Offensive line play

Three of the Oline starters have started games since the 2016 season: Foster, Conrad and Farmer. Jaimes and Farniok started last year. Until he got hurt, I think Tommy made it look as if the Oline play was more than acceptable. But I also think the lack of good strength and conditioning has actually degraded Oline play over the past couple of years.
Opponents have a blueprint. Be aggressive and get an extra guy in the mix and it's likely someone doesn't get blocked. What's the solution for Frost? Go with two TEs and get some help with blocking? Bench a couple of guys?
Perdue is 1-3, but they can watch game film.

One of the few positives from yesterday was that we were able to give our backups on the line some pt. And they didn’t do too bad against Michigan’s second string.
Agreed, great that they got some snaps and have some game film for the coaches to look at.

I think this is one of the best posts I have read on here in the past few days. What teams have been doing is simple. They are overloading the box and bringing more guys than we can block. Add in some stunts and you get a completely overwhelmed line. So when teams do that one of the standard ways a coach can counter it is to go to two tight end sets. I also think Conrad should be benched.

Our tight ends aren't exactly built like Cethan Carter yet either. Lol. More food and weights needed.

I think some inventive playcalling out of two TEs would be something to try. The WRs won't be happy about the diminished snaps, but what NU is doing now isn't working. Is there a reason the coaches don't go with Farmer at Center and Wilson at OG?

All good questions. And since I trust these coaches I assume they have their reasons for not benching Conrad or playing more Tight Ends in formations. I don't like telling the coaches what to do since I am a nitwit. Lol. But it is interesting to make these kinds of observations. And if we are making them I am sure the coaches are too. Maybe some changes will be forthcoming.

Our lack of vertical threats doesn’t help either. It would have been interesting to see if we had scored on the pass to JD on the opening drive, if that would have changed things. We haven’t made people pay for stacking the box yet and no reason to think they will until we do.

Yep. Our most overrated position group is the receivers. Other than Morgan and Spielman nobody has stepped up.

I actually don’t like the idea of this team using more multiple TE sets. Our TE’s aren’t as talented as the guys we take off the field and we just bring more guys in box, making the reads a little tougher for our freshman QB.

I agree. Which is why I said it is just one way coaches have countered stacking the box. And our young tight ends are not good blockers anyway.

I think we have enough speed at WR to stretch the field vertically, there are just a few things holding us back. The main one is lack of time to get a guy down field. To throw deep, the line has to give A.M. at least 3 seconds. Secondly, I think teams are playing press coverage on our wr’s...they need to be able to beat the press coverage quickly before the pass rush gets to AM (not easy when AM is running for his life after a second and a half). Third problem is that teams are playing their safeties over the top to take away the deep ball if our WR’s do manage to beat press coverage. What is open is the intermediate passing game...but again our oline isn’t giving AM the time to take advantage of it.

In summary, stack the box, run stunts and blitzes, press cover the wr’s with safeties over the top to take away the deep ball and bet that blitz will get there and Nebraska can’t beat you throwing the ball over the middle for 10 yards all game. And so far, they’re right.

The problem with the OL is that since we have lacked true depth for over 3 years, there is really no one pushing the starters. Players get complacent when they feel that there spot is not in jeopardy. Competition is what Frost is trying to do. That is why he brought in 50 new players to the program. However this takes more than one year it implement. Once we have depth across the entire line our OL play will improve significantly imo.

WR has been another position group with buy-in issues

Or the fact they aren’t that good. RSS buys in to the local beat writers way too much. Stanley might be a 5th WR for a few years in the league. Will be lucky to get drafted. Folks on here actually think he’s a Day 2 pick. Laughable.

Possibly using an offensive lineman lined up as a TE. Having five receivers run routes if the QB doesn't have time to even hit the hot read makes no sense.

Yes. I'm just sooooo glad AM didn't get cremated yesterday. The poor dude had about 1.5 seconds to throw the ball....it's almost a miracle he survived.

Not enough top-end speed.

I wouldn't mind this. Not moving Farmer to C is another coaching mistake. There is blame everywhere. Frost needs to be a little more critical and creative with his personnel, or lack-thereof.

But it would bring more blockers in to protect Martinez. Catch50 has a point, if Martinez or Bunch have no time to throw the ball, it's a shitshow all year long.

Offensive line now is a priority for this coaching staff to fix and get their type of linemen in the system...

We need to recruit a few more JC players for next year..

Not really. If you bring two more in to block, they bring two more onto the line with them. Couple that with the fact that they aren’t great blockers, you are just making a bad situation worse. If you spread those guys out wide, at least the D has to put someone out there on them.

What’s worse is the former staff recruited Fant for DE instead of TE, It’s know wonder he went to Iowa...
My recollection is Bo recruited him for D end... Riley at least reached out to him as TE, butthe damage was done and he was set on Iowa.

Come to think about it right Riley came in December and Fant was being courted heavily by Iowa at the time so you’re correct it was Pelini..
