Our perimeter d was obviously great tonight as we took them out of a lot of stuff and cut down there threes but I loved our offense tonight . Not sure where all of the stuff I saw tonight has been this year or even the last few years but more if it please .

Our ball movement and actions on offense were much better . I haven’t seen many of the sets we ran tonight ; at least not often. We ran a few great rip screens for Cliff and a bunch of zoom action for Ron. The ball didn’t stick and we moved it from side to side. We ran more continuous offense with the ball sticking less minus a few sets where Paul overdribbled.

Also Mag is very underrated off the ball. His cutting ability is terrific , especially when his defender loses sight of him and his 45 cuts on baseline penetration is great. Kid has great instincts

I agree with this whole thread. Mag in the next 1-2 years gives off a Mathis type vibe. He’s a diamond in the rust in which we need in all games.

Perimeter D wasn’t bad, at some points it was exceptional, at some points we gave up a fair amount of open looks that just didn’t fall for Purdue. A fair amount of them off offensive rebounds though which is just tough to defend.

Mag is really showing up big in pretty much every chance he gets. Very timely. Doesn’t try to do to much and compliments the rest of the roster nicely with his off ball effort on offensive as you’ve said.

Ball movement seemed better but just not sure without another look how much better it really was. As you mentioned, offense slowed with Paul at times which tends to happens for a stretch or two each game. We did set a lot off off ball screens for Ron which I think is very helpful and suits him because he’s not one to get open himself too often - tonight he was all catxh and shoot but other nights it gives him a chance to catch the ball moving which helps him get going down hill.

All in all definitely some hopeful bits this game to build on going forward.

All good points. When Ron has to handle the ball up top or on the wing going one on one that’s not his game and it gives teams a chance to load up. We need to use him much more like tonight. Of course it helps when the ball goes through the net but coming off screens , low post and mid post ( where he’s really dangerous ) are his best spots. He also missed a shot out of a timeout that we set up a nice ato where he came off some baseline screens and just missed. All good stuff and hopefully it continues

First off it's diamond in the rough.

2nd much better player than Mathis because he can shoot a bit and doesn't play with his head down. But he's shown me a lot lately

The offense has been there. Do you really think a new offense.was implemented in a few days.

The problem has ALWAYS been execution....or, lack of execution by the players.

Paul got us in our offensive sets all night. Key was the opposing guard was only 6 feet.

Purdue gets enormous production from 3 spots on the floor. The key to the game was Paul and Ron able to not get too taxed defensively.

My eye tells me Purdue is good, but they are your typical 3 or 4 seed and not special.

Not a whole new offense, but you can definitely put new things in or emphasize things that you haven't run very much yet in almost a week of practice. Remember, we didn't play since last Friday so we had almost a full week of practice. Obviously execution is huge and was much better, but my guess is there was definitely new stuff and am emphasis on stuff maybe we hadn't run a lot this year.

Its been lack of fire and intensity most nights. Disinterest. Tonight was different.

Purdue has the ingredients of a final four team. They just don't have the ingredients to beat a steve pikiell rutgers team

McConnels D on Stefanovic (especially the last few minutes) was outstanding. If you get a chance to rewatch the game look at that.

100 percent. He beat him to the spot on all their zoom action and dribble handoffs and got over the top of the handoff man. Great d all night

They are good, don't get me wrong. They aren't great. If some of our RU fans were Purdue fans the message board would blow up why Painter couldn't get a point guard and another wing. They are a 3 person team (counting Idey and Williams as 1)

Any of the Top 40 or so teams in today's game have the ingredients of a Final 4 team. They could certainly win it all. I just didn't see a special team.

It's playing at home. Being calm. Having poise. Not having a ton of pressure defensively.

The shots you get can come down to effort in how hard you make your cuts.

I contend we didnt see their best. Stefanovic is usually money from the outside. Thompson was a no show, They missed several open 3s later in the game where we were fortunate as we were beat and scrambling to cover. Watch their game vs Villanova or Florida State. If you have an inside outside combo you will always be a final 4 threat

obviously their weakness is ball handling and they seemed to fluster a bit when faced with physical defense

well what team is special nowadays. Gonzaga already has two losses and lost to a team that lost to Iona. This season might be the most wide open but I still say certain teams are more equipped tourney time. Purdue is, Illinois might get there by seasons end.

Illinois is better than Purdue. I understand that I watched us lose by 30 to Illinois and beat Purdue so it is understandable my bias.

I will say I am dying to watch Cockborn vs. Idey/Williams!

People are not respecting road vs home. I love Purdue’s roster. They smoked a solid FSU team and beat Nova. They are going to win a lot of games, and easily be a top seed in tournament.

You have to give us more credit. Our defense took their 3 point shooters out of much of the game.

Best of Luck,

100% we ran way more screen action for Ron than ever before.

Mag was a big help he was cutting back door every chance he had getting easy buckets and importantly creating space.

There is no offense that exists in basketball, with some sort of post up, either at the elbow (FT Line), mid post or low post. Doesn't mean it has to be a center doing it, it just needs to have a player who can dribble, pass, shoot and draw defenders from the post.

Anyone who claims there isn't an offense being run, doesn't understand the game.

If you have a defensive presence to slow down the post or can defend the post without help, it can slow down an offense.

Stop listening to posters who don't understand the game or are the ones who come up with vague general statements.

If you have an elite defender with height, speed and wingspan like Coleman Hawkins at Illinois, Harper has to then get his offense off the ball....RU never had another option to post and run offense through, with Cockburn clogging the lane. It is a tougher matchup, different teams, different strengths.

As good as Cockburn is, I would have let Kofi have 12 dunks and layups and stuck with Frazier, Plummer and others....If Cockburn gets 35 to 40, so be it.

And I will say it again for the basketball illiterate, wanting shooters, shooters etc.....if you have shooters, who can't create their own offense, can't defend, are scared to rebound in traffic, that player is not going to contribute at this level of basketball......

Defense, stopping what an opponent does well, getting into passing lanes, doing what Caleb McConnell, Jalen Miller and Mawot Mag did, is winning basketball.....getting stops and matching the intensity (Miller, and specifically Caleb dominated Purdue by creating breakdowns on what they wanted).....

35 to 36 minutes of senior, scrappy basketball and timely baskets by Caleb, should be noted....to guard Ivey is not easy.....RHJ gets the headlines, Cliff battled, Mag showed up.....but Caleb did the dirty work required to win.....

Yeah when he knocked that pass to Stefanovic in the last 2 minutes out of bounds Stefanovic totally fouled Caleb to prevent him from going for the ball!! Another non call by the refs
I remember that play. Great play by Caleb.

Easy foul to see but the refs swallowed their whistle.
