Pretty cool. If you go to the site with this post card of original Rutgers Stadium and view it in a mirror, you will see a giant "R" appear in the image.

Sutphen Road leading up to the Stadium from River Road is named for the Congressman who played a big role getting the WPA funds.

The first game was on October 22, 1938. It was a 32-0 shut out of Hampden-Sydney before 12,000. In the stands were all the workers who worked on the Stadium.

The Princeton game was the Stadium Dedication Game three weeks later. It was Rutgers first victory over Princeton (20-18) since the first game in 1869. Art Gottlieb was the Rutgers QB and one of the people on the Rutgers Stadium construction crew!

This is a very interesting article. I did not realize that the original RU football stadium was funded and built as part of a WPA project. There are probably many of these type of stadiums built nationally as WPA projects. Many stadiums during that time were built in the amphitheater style. The $800K grant is worth about $18 million today and the total $1 million cost in 1937 is worth approx. $22 million today.

So in reading that article, the first sentence immediately jumped out at me:

The greatest outdoor amphitheatre to be built since Princeton built Palmer Stadium in the years after the World War, ...

It references the World War, no numbers after it as there had only been one war up to that point worthy of being called a world war.

But World War 1 was known as the Great War before World War 2 occurred. So i find it interesting that the author of the article called it the World War

Palmer Stadium at Princeton was built in 1914.

I know nothing about that or our rivalry with Princeton as that ended before my time. I was just commenting on the fact that because we hadn't had a second world war yet they were not numbering them.
