Does this sound right?

In Rotation:
Ulis
Skal
Lee
Poythress
Murray
Mathews
Briscoe

Maybe In Rotation, Depending:
Humphries
Mulder
Willis
Hawkins

Not In Regular Rotation:
Floreal
David
Pulliam
Humphries will play a ton . Mulder will play some as well . But for the most part this is right . I actually think Humphries plays more or as much as Lee.

What is the world is Tipton implying with this tweet?

"As fans reminded of "greatest tradition in history of college basketball, ad for pizza rolls appears on new ribbon boards."

And?

So I see that free throws are going to be a BIG problem if they don't start practicing shooting free throws...

This is a beef every single year, and I finally accepted and realized that it's a non-issue. Of course in any individual game, FTs can be one of the problems or reasons for a loss, but overall there really is no clear link between really good FT teams and titles.

I gaurentee you that there hasn't been a national champion that shot free throws at under 50%

Matthews is going to be difficult to keep off the floor. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts. Even if he doesn't, he will get major minutes. He is the exact type of player Cal loves to have on his team.

I don't think we will for the year. I could see us shooting 60-65 which isn't good at all. I could see us shooting under 50 in a final four or champ game.

Bad free throw shooting teams won't last long in ncaa. Cal would have won a title while at Memphis if his team would have made free throws.
That'll happen no matter how good you are at ft shooting. You just have to hope that you are good enough in other areas to overcome that when it inevitably happens. As long as you aren't garbage it isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Not sure if you're serious or not. But it raises an interesting question. Has there ever been a college basketball team shoot free throws under 50%?

Overall very encouraging signs tonight....but we still need some help down on the block. Obviously Cal knows it because he calls the team "soft" in every media interview he gives. Wouldn't surprise me at all if Wynyard gets playing time after Christmas. I can envision a time late in the season where we make offensive/defensive substitutions with Humphrey/Wynyard depending upon what we need in that specific game. (Unless Lee steps his game up)

by the way , Briscoe went 1-6 from the FT line and he's a 70%+ ft shooter in high school. Skal went 2-5 and he's a 70% + shooter in high school and Matthews went 2-7 ... he too is above 70% in high school. The rest of the team went 8-12 while those 3 players went 5-18. All three were nervous and if you remember hearing from Kyle Macy and other former UK guys, nerves get to you most at the ft line early on as freshmen.

When Cal says "soft", does he mean like "not up to UK tough guy standards" soft, or like really, really soft...like UNC*** soft?

I would be very okay with Matthews logging some minutes at the 4. Rebounds well, elite slasher, freak athlete, etc.

I've always thought if Willis were to transfer to someplace like a Gonzaga type program, he could have a Kyle Wiltjer like transformation. Not that he would be a POY candidate like Wiltjer, but could be a solid starter with Double digit scoring average.

Pretty amazing that Wiltjer is actually a favorite for national POY. I know he didn't fit into our program very well, but he was by all means a solid person and really made the right move going to Gonzaga. Good for him.

I guess one question about Willis is, "Can he play one-on-one defense?" If he doesn't show that he can, he won't play.

I've wondered why we never heard any complaints or comments last year, by any coaches, players, or the national press (that I heard or read), that "Wiltjer can't play defense." It's my understanding that that's the reason he was wearing a Gonzaga uniform instead of a Kentucky uniform in his All-America season. Anybody know anything about that?

anyone else remember months ago when BigKyfan10 admitted he was a fan of another team?
I did did I, well why don't you quote that post or better yet screen capture it. I'll give you a million dollars if you can find I post where I say I'm a fan of another college basketball team.

You can't find highschool basketball stats for Skal since he didn't even play his senior year. You also can't find Matthews stats anywhere on Maxprep.com. So where are you getting Skals and Matthews stats from?

For those who are worrying about FT shooting you are worrying for nothing. These guys will get better as the season goes along. This was their 1st time on the collage floor and they were nervous. Cal has already said this is something they will work on.

I have been telling some of you that Matthews was a player. This kid is going to be really good by March.

This is going to be a good passing team and also will press a lot and we have some really great guards. It's going to be another fun year.

You can't draw conclusions on a team's free throw shooting based on data from just one game. That sample size is way too small.

I was just saying this to my wife. He's from eastern Kentucky for goodness sake!

He's sounded like that ever since playing for Pitino. I always thought he sounded like he tries to mimic him even in his delivery. Not saying he does, just that he sounds like it.

Has worked on his shoot that is for sure. Will see some minutes at the 4 to help rest Alex. Very impressed with his play tonight.

i just got home from the game
i was very impressed with Mathews, kid just glides in traffic, he is going to get minutes
our guards are the best in the country, i don't think it is even close
Poythress looks bigger in the arms and shoulders, his shot looks much softer (more forgiving)
overall for this early i was really impressed with the whole team

This team seems very unselfish.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Matthews playing some 4 this year
I don't think so. If Humphries were a scrub who couldn't guard a sign post, you may be right. But with Labissiere, Humphries, Poythress, and Lee, I think they've got the 4 and 5 spots covered.

I would expect to see Matthews almost exclusively at the 3, unless he shows that he can consistently knock down the 3. If he can do that, I'd expect to see him play the 2 at times. But he's a slasher and a finisher, which means he needs to be on the wing. He's got the hops to rebound well but lacks the strength to get it done. He'd have little chance to guard an SEC power forward and keep him off the box and off the boards. He can fly in and grab boards though, from the wing. That's my 2 cents.
