Wanted to give my early not that crucial first assessment of the scrimmage and viewpoint regarding the team.
initially , compared to last year this year’s team has more talent and more scorers. It was encouraging to see a low post offensive scorer for the first time in I do not know how many years but at the same time it was discouraging that 3 players that are now older did not take any appreciable leap at least from just looking at 1 game.
Gurdack is a pleasant suprise how far along he is offensively. He moves to the basket quickly and can score with both hands . He initiated a lot of the offense from the high post or wing and sets good picks , including the one Lino hit for the potential 4 point play. He rolls well. He has good hands but did not catch 2 or so passes that Lino gave him that would have turned into points. His offensive rebounding was good but I did not think his defensive rebounding was good . He took almost every shot when the ball was passed down to him and a minor criticism would be I would have liked for him to kick out for threes we desparately needed. Hopefully that part of his game is there. Overall defensively stayed in front of his man and did well but he is not a rim protector but his defense was good. Seems like a smart player that will help us tremendously. Will get you a bucket if we go on a scoring drought.
Did not mind him shooting the three as I think he can make it and give us a stretch 5 look at times .

Smith was also very aggressive and has moves , can handle and makes tough shots. Hit our only 2 threes until Lino hit 2 late so that is another dimension he offers. He will be able to hit a ton of mid range shots and defenders will have a hard time keeping g him down all game. His defense was better than was previously advertised and his rebounding was good as well. Another good player that will help us a lot.

Lino is so fast with the dribble and despite not finishing a couple of times he has gotten better. He had 5 assists to go along with his scoring and could have been more . His 2 late threes appears to be something that we can count on this year. Not 40% but 33.3% from 3 is very plausible. His defense is outstanding and he will lead this team this year.

Now some negative thoughts but I thought JMike , Powers and Buchanan did not do anything that showed any appreciable improvement. JMike will play less once Francis is back so his 10-15 minutes backing up Lino and Francis will be fine in running the point , hitting an occasional shot and playing defense . He gave up too many threes so that was disappointing

Powers is such a dilemma. The kid has all the skills but his shot does not look like money , his defense was just okay. His best plays of the day were the putback dunk of Jmike’s miss and his drive that he got assaulted and hit 2 foul shots. I wanted to see tangible improvement and it just was not there.
Buchanan was just okay. His defense is usually good but Royal was his main assignment and he let up 20 points. His offense did not look any different . He is solid for a backup at the 3 or the 4 .

C.Jones was very heady and played really tight defense especially in the second half cutting down on Villanova ‘s Perkins killing us from 3. He can handle. He will help us on both ends.

Diego was not in long enough to tell anything.
Ware looked serviceable as a backup to Gurdack and had a nice bucket down low.

We did not have Francis , Syndor or Buca so it was encouraging to see the effort against a decent Villanova team . I thought for an exhibition game , it had high intensity defense played all game by both teams , guys diving in the floor and getting after it. So it was only one game and cannot overreact to an exhibition game but it felt like a legitimate test .

Overall , again only one game , but we will likely be a lot better than last year with multiple scoring options , a low post presence , a wing that can operate for buckets , elite speed at point guard that I think is primed for a breakout year , and a defense that was better although failed to get over screens for giving up too many threes. We were outscored from 3, 13-4 that is 39-12 or by 27 and until Lino’s 2 late ones it was 13-2 or outscored by 33 from 3. That is almost impossible to overcome but we almost did it. Our foul shooting will be good as Gurdack , Smith , Lino, Davis ,Powers will shoot in the 70’s and then there is Tarik at close to 90%.

Good observations but unduly hard on J Mike IMHO. The beef I had with what I saw on Sunday is Brandon Knight's refusal to adapt our offense to the modern era. He has reportedly been in charge of the O for the past few years and continues to emphasize mid-range shots instead of 3-pointers and shots at the rim. Statistically, that is a losing offense making it very hard to win games. Even with only 36% shooters from 3-point range (which is Pike's fault for not recruiting better shooters), RU would almost always be much better off shooting 3s rather than mid range jumpers. RU would have to make mid-range jumpers at a 54% clip just to equal a 3 pointer taken by a 36% shooter. I doubt anyone on this team sticks a 12-footer regularly at 54%. Yet RU absolutely refuses to adapt! I noticed Nova had only 2 real top 3 point shooter (Fiegen at Simmons), but as a team they nonetheless put up a huge volume of threes (36) and won the game with their 36% 3-point shooting, which was with a much higher percentage in the second half, and by attacking the rim.

Do not disagree about needing more 3 point offense but I think Knight was trying to figure out what offense he could rely upon. Gurdack looks like he can shoot at least 50 % from down low. He also took 3 wide open shots when the ball was swung from 3. I think he can make them although he didn’t this game. Powers was set up from 3 a couple of times and for some reason hesitated and then went into 2 point range and got his shot blocked. Lino and JMike can both hit 3’s on good ball movement and swinging the ball. We need more of it and Francis should give you a little as well

You mentioned Villanova ‘s 3 point shooters and you left out Perkins who hit 4 of them and some from pretty deep. Jones did a real good job defensively on him the last 10 minutes. Our issue for years is how bad our 3 point shooting defense has been and that is the thing that has to drastically change so you do not get the disparity we had in that game. We did a much better job last 10 minutes but it has to be all game long.

Perkins is a clutch player for sure, but shoots only 36.9% from three so he didn’t make my list as a sharpshooter (40% plus). I agree about Gurdak. But the fact remains, we scored more points from the mid range than we did from three or at the rim. I have no problem with getting the ball inside. It’s the abundance of the damn mid-range shots that are an albatross. We took 17 three-point shots. Villanova took 36.

Very encouraged by our performance, especially without two of our starters. I thought our D was good all night. We gave up 13 treys but Nova runs their offense that way, with 55% of their shots coming from beyond the arc.

So, they outscored us from deep but we took it to the hole more, got fouled and outscored them from the FT line and from 2-point range. In fact, I thought we should have won the game on Lino’s last drive to the rim as time was running out.

Gurdak, Smith, and Lino, along with Tariq and Sydnor should be a formidable starting five, and a deep bench with good size will keep us in games and allow us to press and trap.

The way we play, shooting 17 threes should be enough, and hopefully we’ll be able to make 6 of those on average, to win our fair share this year.

Agreed. I don’t want us forcing the issue with 3s. It’s not like we don’t have guys who can hit them, but we’re going to be better at scoring in other way and right now we have a lot of work to do in cleaning up the transition D off those long rebounds. Forced shots from long range result in more of those which wouldn’t be a good thing for us.

Three point D needs some work, but it wasn’t all bad. Was notably better with Jones in the game. We had one really bad stretch at the beginning of the second half. That can’t happen. Did a much better job contesting down the stretch. They hit one bank shot 3 and made one other contested 3 but we cleaned up the open looks. Kaden still needs a lot of work on those close outs. JMike is excellent on ball but has to stop running into those screens - leaves guys wide open.

We were more successful from inside the arc against Villanova. We shot 45.8% from two and 23.5% from three with an effective rate of 35.3%.

If we continue sub .300 as a team from 3 we just aren’t going to win many high major games. I don’t see a lot of good shooters on this team but I hope I’m wrong

I think JMike and Buchanan are what they are at this point. Guys generally don’t make big jumps in their 4th and 5th years.
Agree, although I sensed JMike was "pressing" to do too much. I hope he demonstrates some maturity and plays within himself, which would be an asset to this team.
From watching what RU has this year, Buchanon will have to work hard for as many minutes that he received last year. I'm curious if he could be quick enough to D against some of the B1G bigger guards, which RU is going to need.

I liked what I saw from Ware, he's still on the "raw" side, however he doesn't look lost like he did last year, and showed some good hands and coordination. I wouldn't be surprised that he is a solid 8-10minute contributor in February. Which as a 2nd year big, I would be very happy with.

To me it’s less about the exact # of 3-pointers we’re taking and more about what types of shots we’re taking instead. This is, in all likelihood, a bad shooting team, so attacking the rim is probably better than hunting 3s in most circumstances. But if our offense results in Darin Smith post-iso for a fadeaway or a Kaden Powers step-in 2 from 18 feet, we’d be better off with a 3.

JMike’s history has shown that he plays within himself as a general rule. I’m not too worried about that.

But "inside the arc" includes layups and does not isolate the FG% for mid-range shots which is almost always lower than the FG% for layups.

This is always a crazy debate in this analytical era. But if you have players that are good or maybe very good from midrange and can make 45-50% but shoot under 30% from 3 , do you have them shoot 3’s anyway. Francis , it appears Smith and Gurdack , Powers for sure , are better mid range shooters. Our layup % will go up this year because of Gurdack alone as we have been abysmal for many years. We need to sprinkle in 3’s from good ball movement , off of fast breaks , and probably not jack up more than 20 a game. Villanova shot 36 which was about their normal. It is not our normal. Plus I think we will get fouled more this year in the paint and while driving and our foul shooting should be very good. So getting to 70 a game should be doable. We need our defense to improve especially 3 point defense
