It took longer this season than last.

I know these were all 3 WPs & not PBs, but my point remains. It's gotta be hell on our catchers.

I don't understand this.

Is the bounce off the turf harder to catch/stop than a bounce off bare dirt?

I would think that the turf gives a more predictable/consistent bounce than does dirt.

Am I missing something?

The ball skids on turf. Also, turf that utilizes ground rubber has been shown to create respiratory issues as well. No idea if ours has the rubberized pellets.

Seems like a ball hitting dirt in front of the plate will catch and drag a bit, slowing it down slightly. A ball hitting that plastic turf seems like it will just skip off and keep on humming along.

Dudy needs a restraining order against fake turf. That trash **** shouldn't be legally allowed within 1000 yards of DN.

Right. That makes sense.

The bounce off turf is truer, but it's also doesn't slow down the ball at all.

Thus, less time to react for the catcher.

Knowing this, the catcher should focus only on immediately reacting to a badly-thrown pitch and getting himself into the line of the pitch.

(I'm sure our catchers are already doing this, and the ball is still getting past them.)

Going back and forth between turf and dirt, and having different strategies for each, has got to be tough.

And I agree . . . the turf around home plate with grass/dirt everywhere else does look stupid.

I'll bet the field crew loves it though.

Don't know who downvoted you, but they're wrong. Turf at the Dude is an abomination. Shouldn't be legally allowed on campus.

No, you are onto something, the turf seemed to be exaggerating the tail on ceranto's curve. Tanner was blocking it, but he wasnt getting out far enough nor angling his chest where it would bounce back inside. He knows what's coming, he should be ready for it.

All that being said, is it just me or do we have 15 tanners on this team?

Cohen wants us to be like Vandy.
This is actually the truth. He thought it played faster back in the dead bat era of 2011-2014.

Either way, we're back to normal now, and we need to get rid of it. Fake turf has no business at Mississippi State. Fake turf for the basepaths, batter's box and mound has no business on any baseball field anywhere outside of the Pacific Northwest and I still don't think it should be there either.

Jay Powell explained it best on the radio broadcast and I'm paraphrasing here:

"Turf does give it a 'truer' bounce, however it doesn't slow down the spin like dirt or grass would. And sometimes it accelerates the spin. So the catcher was in position but the spin on the ball never died and it's still spinning when it hits his chest protector."

Cohen will give you a nice PowerPoint of why he wanted it and he ran all the numbers for it.

There are only two reasons why it was done.

1.Cohen liked it due to faster speed with dead ball era and bunting.
2. Turf crew prefers it like that due to the use the turf areas of the field get. I've heard most of the traffic on a baseball field is the area right in front of the dugout and it is the hardest to maintain.

number one is out of the picture now (well not really but kinda since cohen is still around), if they were to do turf, why couldn't they just have made home plate dirt instead of turf like other park that have turf foul lines? Just don't get it.

Agree, the net benefit obtained regarding wear and tear on the turf is overrated. It tears up quickly. I guess maybe we don't track as much mud in the dugout, but who cares. I'd be ok with the warning track being turf I guess, for that reason, but nothing else. The dirt off the field really makes the green turf look crappy, if it was being tracked on the brown it wouldn't be so bad. They can add a turf walkway from the dugout to the plate too, that and the warning track won't get the heavy traffic that is twisting and turning, like the infield, plate and mound do.
