Been watching World Cup game but what is the fascination with Take me home, country Roads by John Denver. Did I miss something?

Dunno, but DC needs to go back to its original boundaries and WVA needs to merge back into Virginia.

It and Sweet Caroline are two songs that affluent upper class Americans know all the words to. Part of soccer's pageantry is singing and chanting along as a country.

The US is so expansive, most of our chants are regionalized to colleges. Quite frankly they are better than a lot of other countries if we would just rally behind a couple.

Wish we had a real US marching band and would play songs like Neck ("Suck that Yankee dick, *****" would go hard), Dixieland Delight (**** England, etc) and just have the Seminole War Chant going. Would be extremely intimidating.

I'm imagining the English reaction to a stadium full of ringing cowbells.

Honestly they should have played a US game in Davis-Wade, just as big as Anfield btw, and let us bring cowbells. The European mind cannot fathom the intensity.

It's also popular globally because it's been covered so much.

Olivia Newton John, an Aussie, covered it in the 70s and it was an international hit.
It's stayed popular for the last few generations.

This is a performance prior to an Aussie Football League match from a couple years ago.

I saw him in concert in Biloxi circa 79. The power went out, there wasn’t a back up generator. He sat on a stool, with an acoustic guitar and somebody placed a flashlight at his feet shining up.

it was packed. Nobody made a sound and you could hear him even in the nosebleeds.
