This one is loaded with iconic players. My initial thought for number 44 has always been the great Willie McCovey.

One of the big reasons was the model number of the Willie McCovey bat, MC44. It had the largest barrel allowed.

My personal favorite #44 was Ival Cooper who was a super modified racer from Michigan who lived in Jackson and raced all over the Southeast including the track at Clinton.
He had different numbers over the years but I remember him in the 44.

His name was the first words I ever spoke.

wasn't David Fair number 44? Dude was a monster until knee issues.
Leroy Kelly and John Riggins come to mind from the NFL.

David Fair was #44, and also Bo Robertson (RIP), LB from the 1980 MSU team from Durant, MS.
