Number 1 Seeding Process

Just wondering if anyone interprets the 16-17 Seeding Process the way I read it.

1. In the 14-15 NCHSAA Handbook section (g) Para (2) it used to read;

“If a school finishes first in it’s part of a classification of a split conference, it is seeded as number one and not actually where it finishes overall in the conference.”

2. In the 16-17 Handbook under Seeding section 4.1.18, paragraphs (b) and (d) in now reads;

(b) “Seed all first place regular season champions.”

(d) “All other qualifying teams by 10 game winning percentage.”

3. Now the way I read this is in the past a team that finished first in it’s classification of a split conference got seeded as a number one under the old NCHSAA Handbooks. But it doesn’t say that this year, it says only the number one team of the conference gets a number one seed and the teams that finish first in their classification of a split conference are seeded based on their records with all the other teams that qualify for a playoff berth.

My take on this is that NCHSAA changed the seeding process since they no longer seed by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and at large bids, instead only the conference champion gets a number 1 seed in order to preclude a team that finishes first in it’s classification of a split conference but has a record of let’s say 5-5 from getting a higher seed than a team that finishes with say a 9-1 record.

Any other thoughts or takes on this?

On page 22 (nchsaa PDF) It says that each classification gets a "conference winner" or automatic bid to the playoffs. They are then seeded based on record (and other seeding rules if their is a tie). Then all other qualifying teams are seeded. So a team that is 5-5 can still be seeded higher than a 9-1 team if the 5-5 team won their classification in their conference and the 9-1 team did not win theirs.

Here is another good article that was posted on the 4A board. http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/high-school/article111920297.html

Got my questions answered, there is a seeding video on the NCHSAA website under the Seeing Process. Each number one team in a split conference is considered a conference champion for their respective classification in the split conference.

If Jacksonville was to beat Havelock Friday night would that give them a number 1 seed in the 3AA? Ram60 I think you have confused a fella here. lol

I was thinking of CB Aycock and Eastern Wayne who could have a number 2 or number 3 seed in the east with a record of 5-5. West willl have the number 1 seed, Jacksonville will be 3AA (I think yhey will make some noisr there)
