NU Outback Ticket Sales Update

Talked to my NU tix rep the other day & he said sales have been very strong. As of last week, all of our allotment sections were sold out, with the exception of two small ones -- representing the worst seats of the respective price points. So if our allotment was 11-12k like it was last time, it sounds like we've sold at least 10k...plus I know a good # 'Cats fans have secured tickets through other means. So for a small private school, it sounds like we will once again represent the purple well -- even if we're significantly outnumbered by the orange hordes.

we will have 15,000 fans there. Our team will have a cheering section. Tenn should have about 40,000 fans. Similar to other sec fandoms like aurburn. Thank God no cow bells but a lot of rocky top.

School allotments are literally the worst seats in the stadium...so you can buy those or you can buy sideline seats for half price from Outback Bowl members who join the "committee" for the networking opportunity to rub elbows with other members of the Tampa business community but who couldn't care less about the game itself.

They have a college in Nashville where people learn and stuff.

They call it Vanderbilt. They suck at football. Like Northwestern, they are the blind squirrel that finds an acorn occasionally (as in having a good season).

Except Vanderbilt has been to 4 bowl games since 2000 and against middling opponents (BC, NC State, Cincy, Houston). Except Vandy lost to us both times we've played them in the 2000s and canceled on us because they were scared to play us again. Except Vandy graduates 85% of its football players and we graduate 97%.

Every conference has an "academic" school. The ACC has Duke. The Big XII has ... Baylor, I guess. In the SEC, it's Vandy, but frankly the 'Dores don't have much in common with us other than being the scholarly-minded school of its respective conference.

Besides, if we're the Vandy of the Big Ten, you must be the Minnesota Gophers of the SEC.

I have gone both ways. Last Outback Bowl, I went Stubhub and got seats on the 50 yard line. The majority of fans around us were Auburn but there were some NU fans. At the Gator Bowl, I went through NU and were in the corner of the end zone but surrounded by NU fans. I personally enjoyed being in the NU allotment seats much more. To each their own.

Largely agree, most of their movies are really bad, especially recently. But The Waterboy is great. As is Happy Gilmore, and a few older Will Ferrell movies are great.

I actually love visiting Tennessee and the southern hospitality, and desperately want a Music City Bowl bid sometime soon...and I get that "football is like a religion" in SEC country...I'm just embarrassed for fans who think of these universities as sports brands FIRST and colleges second. But hey, we just don't care about football enough I guess, our priorities must be out of order.

Yes TENNESSEE VOLS are a national brand by definition. Maybe not as popular as the late 90's at the moment. Maybe not a popular at the moment as some other teams that have been winning, but national still yet. Wear a TENNESSEE VOLS hat in california and most everyone will know who it is. Wear an nu hat in california and people are most likely to ask "is that a football team"? Looking forward to a great game.

I personally believe that ND, Bama, OSU, Michigan are national. I think that's it. USC, Texas, Penn State, maybe Nebraska would rank above the southern schools mentioned here. But a bevy of southern schools would likely be next.

It's the passion of the fans, the historical populations, traditional greatness, size of alumni base, passion of alumni base, nationwide-ness of alumni base.

In my opinion, FSU is more regional and still recovering from recent downswing. I believe, if the average non-fan were asked to name a college team, their choice would be notre dame or a home or neighboring state team. Or "I don't know." Or something snarky about how football fans are barbarians or buffoons.

I can certainly see someone from a different part of the country saying "hey Northwestern the team" (clearly meaning the team from the school) as opposed to "or Northwestern the airline, or insurance company, or the railroad, or the stockbroker".

I bet there are a ton of casual fans (remember not everyone in the USA goes to college) who think of Stanford as a "football team....from some school" and Duke as a "basketball team......from some school".

Honestly, even as a passionate CFB fan, if I see a vols hat, I have to make sure it isn't a Texas hat. Same puke-orange and all.

I'm a college football and sports fan in Chicago. The first three things that come to mind when I hear Tennessee in a sports context are orange, women's basketball and pat summit - that's why playing and hopefully beating Tennessee will not have as big of an impact on recruiting as LSU, Georgia, Florida etc. outside of the state of Tennessee or maybe SEC country Tennessee football is not a brand, period. It might have been 15-20 years ago but not now.

I don't think Tennessee has ever been as relevant nationwide as PSU (Paterno, linebacker U) or Nebraska (option, walk-on program, blackshirts, Osborne).

Michigan, ND, Bama.

I'd say that the next four mentioned have always had bigger nationwide presences than the list of southern schools you presented. Perhaps less passion among their home populations, but more presence among non college football fans.
