The "I wasn't booing the player, I was booing the staff" idea is again proven to be nonsense. No matter what any given boo bird's intent, Nova clearly felt it was directed at him and the team.

Who cares what he feels? He may be a rutgers hall of fame quarterback, but he is wrong. People booed flood because there were times during 2012 and 2013 nova needed to be benched.

Because booing isn't done in a vacuum - it's *meant* to invoke a response in the target, to let them know that they aren't supported by the fans. The problem with it is that it can't be aimed - it may be intended to make the coaching staff feel like the fans don't support their decision, but it's at the same time felt by the players who feel the fans don't support them.

Saying "I'm booing the coach, not the players" is like trying to perform surgery with a chainsaw - it's messy.

It doesn't matter if the players are wrong or not - in the moment, instead of having a "home field advantage" that comes with the support of a loud fanbase, it's shifting the energy of the crowd against the player. It's exactly the opposite of what a fan wants to do.

It's idiotic.

GS was criticized for playing Teel over Hart.. and going for the wildcat a bit too much. His conservatism was at the heart of his flipping around on QBs.

Do you have any GS era QBs complaining about being booed?
Is he complaining or is he telling the truth? Teel said the same stuff. He said the same stuff to Nova. He said all good things but negative people still want to complain about him. Most fans don’t get the whole game. It’s obvious in this and every thread.

If our Great defense shows up at all we beat Kent St Nova had a crap game. Flood did too. But guess what, our strength that year was D and they sucked too. It was a great season and a crap game. I still won’t boo any of them. It’s a loser mentality. I have too much self respect.

The players and staff start the next day trying to fix it. That’s how my mind works. Guys that boo just want to tear it down which takes nothing but ignorance to do. Fixing problems is the hard part.

Any moron can boo. Not everyone who boos is a moron but any moron can boo and most of them are clueless and classless. That’s all it comes down to.

Did win us a bowl game didn't he? Certainly the QB should have been replaced against PSU, Kent State and Va Tech.

The fans were right in booing Flood. They were right.
Kent st yes. Penn st maybe but who goes in? va Tech no way. Nothing Dodd brings to the table changes the outcome of that game. They kicked our O line’s butts to a man I would say. He wasn’t good but he had no chance which could be said about Penn St. 2 of those picks were not on him. That was obvious to me.

So what do you suggest for those people that paid good money and want to voice their criticisms in the stadium? Bring a sign?

Wow we've got a tough guy over here...

He was 18-22 when playing football here. Far from a "grown man" at those ages. Getting boo'd by your fans will get to you no matter how old you are. Players in professional sports get bothered by it. If you can't understand that then it sounds like someone has some growing up to do. Booing fans deserve to be denigrated for going against one of their own. Don't dish it if you can't handle it
slow down lisa, he's an adult at 18-22 and if he can't handle that he shouldn't have been the leader on the field. Pretty sure we've got plenty of 18-22yr old 'adult's in harms way as I type this.
boo away, no one has the right to tell you not to do this so stop acting like a prima donna

Yes to all three and Va Tech may have been the worst of all three. Didn’t Dodd turn around the Iowa State bowl game? Oops he did didn’t he?

Boos were always justifiably directed at Flood. Fans were correct.

It’s true. Artur’s gonna have to grow up really fast. I suspect game one will be okay. The booing will start in earnest game two.

Who the heck is going to be booing him in his second game against, of all teams, Ohio State?

Old BS argument by some lame fans.
Did you read the article? Clearly Nova felt included as a target of the boos.

Of course that’s how he felt I don’t blame him. But most of the fans were booing Floods stupid management of the QBs

Some fans want to pontificate on booing. But the boo's were clearly directed at Flood's ridiculous decision making.

How about fairness to Chas Dodd? All a matter of perspective.

Apparently it isn't that clear since Nova obviously felt the booing was directed towards him. Even if he was somehow able to discern that, do you think it would make him feel great that the fans are booing the decision to put him in the game? Like someone up above said, it is the exact opposite of home field advantage.

Why is it so important for the fans to voice their criticism in the stadium? Do you want the coaching staff to make their decisions based on the fans' opinions? We are there to watch a game and support our team. It's not a staff meeting, we aren't there to make personnel decisions. Is it not enough to complain to the people you are sitting with, discuss it on here, etc? What exactly does booing our own team accomplish?

As I recall Dodd also got pulled and replaced by Nova during the game

Ok, but it’s ok to voice fans opinions only by cheering? I do get it. But costs for rutgers tix are not cheap. Can a middle class family from Middlesex County (where rutgers is located) really afford season tickets and tailgates considering all the other costs they have to endure?
So let’s say mom and pop decide to shell out some of the savings or vacation fund for this, if the product stinks they can’t voice their opinion at the game? I think they have every right to.

I’m new here and this may be unpopular but I didn’t blame Nova for being Nova. I agree with the poster above who said Flood did him a disservice.

I almost look at him as a Chris Rix type from FSU if anybody remembers him. Both of them never should have played right away and it’s a big what if for both of their careers if they had actually gotten proper tutelage.

I never booed Nova or any other player. These are kids trying their best. That being said, he really did display a crappy, diva-like attitude for a lot of his time here and I was not a fan. Maybe he was immature, maybe it was lousy coaching, maybe it was the boos. Likely a combination of a lot of things but he really irked me.

His senior year was totally different. Sure, he played better, but he really seemed to grow up, which impressed me.

Everyone matures at their own pace. I hope Art is ahead of the curve and if Nova can assist him, good for both of them.

Lastly, I know it will pretty much fall on deaf ears, but please don’t boo these kids representing our school.
"... diva-like attitude ..."

So Rutgers-y, it hurts.

Good first post .
But how can anyone blame nova?
He’s a rutgers hall of fame quarterback.

If a segment of the fan base would finally stop acting like classless idiots there wouldn't be a reason for Nova to give Artur advice on handling booing.
But college football is an especially attractive form of entertainment for ****-heals. Like it or not, the greatest scum of each school is more likely to be found together on Saturday than any other time.

Yeah baby - any advice for Chris Simms? Perhaps it would be to go to a school where you could walk around campus w/o being treated like a pariah just because the one team you couldn't beat was Oklahoma?

That was one of the ugliest offensive games I ever saw.. from both teams. We did not move the ball at all in our turn at OT and missed a 42 yard FG.

I am not convinced Dodd couldn't have provided a spark... just a FG in regulation or TD on OT.. or even gots a closer FG attempt to go to another round in OT... just ugly. Of course, so was Dodd's outing in the Pinstripe Bowl the next year.. but that just goes to show that maybe if we spent some time developing backups or showing that Nova was a the man no matter what.. maybe we have better QBs on the roster.

Eh.. who am I kidding.. what QB wanted to play in Flood's offense?

This has nothing to do with having the right to do something. People have a right to be jackasses - I don't think anyone's arguing that they don't. Everyone else has a right to call them jackass when they act like one, too.

People can go to an elementary school play and boo the kids - or to a middle school orchestra concert and boo away. They can go to a Broadway show and boo when an understudy is announced, or go to the NY Philharmonic and boo when a certain composer is chosen over another. "Do you know how much I paid for these tickets?!?" They'll be jackasses every time, but when has that ever stopped some people?

But that's all aside from the main point - which is that booing your own team is quite literally becoming an opposing fan, however briefly. You cheer on your team or you stay quiet, you don't cheer against them. Cheering against Rutgers is what our opponent's fans do - so, booing our own guys is doing exactly what a Penn St or Syracuse fan would do, and puts the booer right in their same boat. And that counts for booing anyone on our sideline - from the starters, to the backups, to the staff, to the trainers, to the student managers. That's our team - supposed "fans" who boo their own team are just being jackasses.

Boo crappy calls by the refs. Boo guys like Ben Mauk mocking the Chop. If you really have to, boo the opposing team as it comes out of the tunnel - unless they're a service academy. Chirp away to your neighbors about this crappy play call or that, or mutter under your breath about some player's performance, or rage tweet, or whatever... but turning our own stadium against our team is petty BS.

And the "but I was booing the third freckle on the assistant coach's left cheek, not the team..." nonsense is just dumb. When you boo at anyone on the Rutgers sideline, you boo *everyone* on the sideline who can hear it. There's no intent or nuance or context to a boo - it's just a wave of disapproval that washes over everyone associated with the team equally.

But as I said - people have a right to be jackasses.

Edit: As with anything, there are exceptions. If DJ Durkin is shown on the jumbotron at Maryland's home opener, for instance, Maryland fans should rightly boo away. But that goes well beyond "I don't like this decision" rationale.

Grown men cant handle boos? at times, he was awful and deserved the chorus but i think most was directed at flood for keeping with him

Novas comment are good, bad, and somewhat childish glad he reached out but denigrating the fans is every bit as classless as the guy booing the kid

So you just admitted that it is classless booing the kid. And you are correct, it is classless to boo college athletes.

You make good points. I am not one to boo our team, but I am not going to criticize people that paid good money and want to participate by cheering or booing. I think we should agree we just disagree lol

On another note I have no idea why lj smith was booed when he was shown on the knights in nfl segment
