It's Maryland: 2-2 over past 4 games.

Now if we can say the same thing (or better) about OSU, Mich., Mich. St. / Ped State....we'll really be rolling.

But don't get me wrong....I'm really enjoying this "W"....A LOT!

We are rivals of a sort simply by being geographically close and similar in character: ie middle of the road programs trying to elevate ourselves. Our rivalry is not heated, not yet anyway. That takes time.

Rutgers v. Maryland will be, for the next few years, a measuring stick game for each program. Beyond the next few years, it will be a “must win if we want to get to a bowl” game. Also given proximity, this can be a rivalry. But rivalries have to be organic, not contrived (see Bob Diaco’s cringe-worthy Civil War trophy for UConn-UCF).

I do think this is a rivalry in the making. Games have been tight and exciting. We recruit the same kids, we are chasing the same goals. MD ahead of RU across the spectrum of athletics, having been in a premier conference for much longer. With football being the big stage, I see this game as continuing to matter a lot. If we can narrow the gap in hoops, I see the potential for a really fun rivalry across seasons.

I also look back to 2007 when Terps under Friedgen beat RU to derail our momentum - we were ranked high.

I couldn't care less about Maryland.. to me they are just another Illinois/Michigan State/Indiana etc. And I'm sure they feel the same way about us.

Maybe in time it will develop into one but certainly not a rivalry today.

I believe that was the "Civil Conflict" (not Civil War) - which, to me, was even more puzzling.

Both teams see the other as a lower level stepping stone they need to get past to have the real rivalry with PSU...who in all honesty we really really hate. Having said that, if both teams keep building, and we keep having highly entertaining games like this, I think the rivalry will blossom.

One note on it: I did not see the Maryland fans in force which hurts the rivalry. The last time we hosted them they had a great presence in the tailgates. And when some of them, a bunch of older respectable looking dudes, brought their own funnel to our tailgate and put us all to shame, we knew that this rivalry had some potential.

We don't hate them and they do not hate us. NJ and MD are too culturally similar and the schools and programs have the same issues ans concerns.

We hate Ped. In fact I generally hate Pennsyltucky. And I despise everything about their program, the cultishness, the laughable moral superiority....the cultural difference and the NJ kids who go there for the cult and PA kids who come here for the real world make it a reality.

- you can have more than one "rival" - most teams in the B1G have multiple "rivalry" games and well as "trophy" games

- you don't have to "hate" someone for them to be your rival

....our games with Maryland have been incredibly competetive, almost all tight, games. They're all of 60 miles of Deleware below us, we compete for students and student-athletes alike, and do have that whole "crab" thing in common as well as coming into the B1G together.

Perfect "rivalry/trophy" game IMHO.

Maryland is the closest thing to a rival in league right now.... if one wants to think it will or should be PSU, that could be a long way off

Maryland is a rival of sorts because three of the four games were battles right to the end.....

Ash seemed cranked up for it, as did the team..... watch the atmosphere of next years game, I think this one stays fairly intense.

Good points, I just don't think Maryland will ever be our prime rival, we can have a trophy, like you say many B1G schools have multiple, but I think both fanbases hate the Cult more, for obvious reasons.

I could see playing for the Bucket of Crabs.

On second thought...
