Just heard this in Auburn/Oregon game...Seemed apt for our situation. S. Alabama jammed the box and they were very aggressive and I just wondered why we rarely took any downfield shots....

1. Could we have done some max protect and went deep to JD...or do we even have a deep threat?
2. Could our oline even protect long enough to get the ball down the field...
3. Could we have moved the pocket to extend and allow wrs to get down the field.

Felt like the game plan was very vanilla and didn't adjust to force S.Alabama to backoff the run and -short-passing game....maybe our staff underestimated our opponent?

Or they had things they wanted to work on this game, knowing they could still pull off a win. The goal isn’t always to blow the opponent out, but to get better. Making easy plays doesn’t make you better

I felt the same way about the first half of last season.

S. Alabama played good zone defense, daring Adrian to put the ball in tight spots and allowing the LBs and safeties to really be aggressive on attacking run plays. Nebraska is going to have to work on "pro" passing and hitting accurate throws against zone defense or it is going to be a long season.

We had guys open downfield. AMart chose not to throw to them. He seemed to really doubt himself
today.

This isn't how college football works. If Frost loses this game it puts his program back two years...S. Alabama had a good gameplan to face our lack of depth at Wr and Rb...and for some reason our qb didn't feel like he could make throws downfield into coverage...

Seemed like we could have thrown some easy bubbles if we had wanted to. Not sure why we didnt.
This. I expect us to work the edges a lot more next week. Smoke to Wandale and JD, make them defend side to side.

I think a lot of the issue today was that USA didn’t stack the box. Usually teams have to put more bodies in the box to account for AM as a runner, so we can hit them over the top on play action. USA was able to stop the run without doing it and stayed in zone and AM wasn’t able to throw into the windows.

Look, I’m not saying frost planned to put us in a close game. But I think he kept thinking we would pull away without having to open things up...which we did only to let them back in. But I don’t think frost went with the same play calling he would have employed vs Ohio state. He saw this as a game to work on things we need to get better at and get new guys reps.

This is a BS argument. Their d-line owned our o-line and we could not open any running lanes. If this doesn't improve, it doesn't matter what play you call, Nebraska is in for a long season.

Yep. You’re right. The offense is screwed. We suck.

If you think that it’s not easier to move the ball on a defense that has to cover the whole field and is on their heels, then idk what to say other than pick up a book on coaching football or something. A defense crashing to the ball is tough to stop. They can’t do that if they don’t know where you’re hitting them

Well, you very well may be right. However, it's true that "sometimes" we look like sh*t for the 1st game and then massively improve. I don't know......we'll just hope for the best.

If they don't have to worry about your run game, it becomes a lot easier to defend the rest of the field, and you just saw a perfect example. And if HCSF was still holding something close to his vest after that first half, than he is not a good coach.. You have to come out and put them away, NO MATTER WHAT.

To add on top of that, we were playing South Alabama, not Wisconsin or Iowa. What, has S. Alabama been playing football for a whole 10 years. We were not playing some football powerhouse juggernaut.

What are you talking about?!? Nebraska needed to use the pass to spread out USA. Quick pass to the flats, downfield throws. Add rpo and spread read and all of a sudden a defense doesn’t know what will hit them. You don’t just run head first into a front 7 forcing the run when you’re really trying to get it going. Today we forced the run. Which tells me frost wanted to work on his oline and see if they could out muscle USA. They couldn’t.

And as far as the second half...Nebraska was up 28-14 and the third quarter was half way over before we touched the ball. We were out of sync and AM was off.

Glad you’re here to judge how good of a coach frost is. We should just fire him and you can take over. That should work

Did I say any of that? I'm not talking about firing anybody. I'm just talking about where this team is at this point in time. I think they can improve. Too many people thinking this is a playoff team. But, if they don't improve, it is not going to be pretty. I am a huge fan of HCSF and I don't think Nebraska should have anyone other than him, and I would like him to be the coach here until he retires.

It was a weird game...we were on track for 450 total yards at half...in the 3rd quarter S. Bama held the ball for 10 minutes then we had two turnovers, and few drives were ruined by big sacks which should be laid at AM being shook a bit. We were running the ball better in the 2nd half, at least ypc-wise and if AM makes a few better decisions we probably win 42-14...that is a normal 1st game score against a poor opponent. I could easily see us get into a better rhythm against colorado with Mo playing from the start...I also expect more designed runs for AM...colorado is going to use some zone and AM is going to have to be comfortable picking it apart.

I missed the part where people on this board are calling us a playoff team... even not on this board, I haven’t seen anybody touting the huskers for the playoff.

Did you really mean that? Quite a few have said B1G west champs, but I haven’t seen playoff...

In the Big 10 the gap between a playoff team and a bad team is actually pretty small. Riley lead a pretty bad team to 8-0 and nearly beat Wisky...the big 10 is garbage...and if you can get OSU or michigan when they are full of drama or missing a qb you have a chance. Even with a deeply flawed team we CAN beat most of the teams on our schedule this year...we get back to back home games...a week off before wisky, OSU at home, and you never know what kind of Michigan team we will get because Harbaugh is a nut. There are maybe 2-3 great teams every year and then the other 100 can pretty much beat each other on any given week.

Rewatched it a little bit and they COULD get pressure with 3 lineman against 6 protectors... this normally happened at the center position as their NT was really quick, like a bowling ball. This meant they had 8 guys in coverage against 4 receivers...and it is apparent that AM is not comfortable throwing against the zone...partially because many of his best targets are short...they also seemed to have good idea of when we would run or pass as they would drop 8 on 1st down and we didn't switch to run...seemed we were running into blitzes and throwing into coverage all game...that shows they had a good game plan and we didn't expect them to be so prepared.
