This old dawg was proud to open the Denver Post today and see a MSU signee, Noah Elliss, listed as one of the top 10 football recruits here on the front range. Noah, 6-5, 320,is listed as number 4 on the Post's list and the Post says of him: "Elliss clogged up the middle of the field, making it nearly impossible for teams to run on Valor Christian (his high school) - not to mention the effect he had on collapsing the pocket." With the resurgence of CU football this seems a particularly good get for us.

I find it fascinating a player from a 20k a year private school is possibly Co Lin bound.

The parents did not get their value.

Do you really think kids like Ellis pay That?

There's several schools around memohis that are "private" schools that cost over 20k that give out scholarships for talented athletes that are as dumb as a brick. A lot of them have reach classes or slower classes for those students so they can make decent grades.

Many times kids are ineligible

For college because they didn't take the necessary classes, not because of a low GPA. Often times, a student can be a senior with a 2.7 GPA but ineligible for college because they haven't taken enough math or English classes. Their schedules were filled with PE and fine arts where they can get an easy A and remain academically eligible for high school, but they will not meet entrance qualifications for college. This is fairly common in public schools but rare in private schools.

There are only two "private schoosl" in Memphis that cost over $20k (MUS & Lausanne) and yes they do provide tuition assistance for athletes as well as very strong academic students. However, at MUS-no one rides for free-all must have some skin in the game. MUS in particular has the same graduation requirements for all students. Honors & AP classes are available for all students that qualify but even the standard classes are still quite challenging. Regarding, MUS, despite the rumor mill & hearsay, most would be surprised at the number of "perceived" athletes on financial aid that actually are. Many pay the full boat and most are pretty good students. I know this because I have two sons there.

As for Lausanne, I cant shed a whole lot of light but I can say that they decided that they wanted to have a top notch championship football program. Enrollment increased and sure enough 2-3 years later, they now are the reigning state champion n their division. In addition, it is my understanding that they are designated as the "at large" private school-meaning if your private school does not offer football or if you are home-schooled, you are eligible to play there.

There is at least one private school in town that does have several different graduation "tracks" to accommodate for varying levels of academic capability. Overall, the perception of rampant recruiting & scholarship/free tuition for athletes at the larger private schools is not overly accurate. Yes, it occurs but not to the level that many would like to think.
