Good article, I agree with it. Was surprised at the walk numbers, that feels like it is our biggest problem, but apparently people are simply raking us too. That is why I like to mix the intangible with tangible to get the clear picture.

Our offensive woes will work themselves out. I think that is simply a matter of timing. Our lineup last night is the best one, in my opinion. I would probably get Gridley out and play Britton as he is a senior, but he is hurt too. Yes I know we got shut out but who cares, just a bad night.

Our team batting average against is the same as USM's but our team ERA is approximately 1.5 higher. That tells you that we are walking too many batters. I'd like to see the OBP against stats compared.

OBP against us in '14 was .325, in '15 it's .338.

We slugged 340 last year. Not 305

I just cant compare last yr to this yr offensively because last years numbers are a 60+ game sample and we still havent hit the toughest part of our sched.

Thank you for the correction. I posted the SLG% against us, not ours.
The numbers stated are averages.
Using totals, of course, would not be comparable.

Right but using averages isnt apples to apples either.

If someone hits .400 over 60 games. Thats not the same as someone who hits .400 over 27 games against the lightesy part of te schedule

I completely understand, but I'm not forecasting, just stating where we are now to where we finished last year.

You can't compare stats from 2014 to 2015 because our schedule is so backloaded (even more so this year than usual). In 2014, our strength of schedule was #19. So far this year, it's #125. So, while some of the numbers look better right now, they will probably look worse at the end of the season. The fact is, our season so far has been a disaster. We're 10-9 against top 200 teams, 4-7 against top 100. And we haven't even played anybody in the top 30 yet.

Along those lines, the only difference I see in our offense in 2014 and our offense in 2015 is we railroaded some teams the first weekend. That is bumping our scoring up some, but most other metrics regarding the offense are pretty comparable to last year. And hell, we haven't even played any elite SEC pitching yet.

I don't even really mind the runners left on base. We're a team that gets on base, and then hits singles. That's a recipe for leaving runners on.

That's my thought. Our level of competition through the first 27 games this year is not nearly as good as the past 2 years. If our first 2 SEC series had been top half of the league caliber teams then a 2-4 start would be easier to stomach. Also, the change in the baseballs which has offense up everywhere makes it more difficult to do a direct comparison of our offensive stats and our pitching stats this year to the past couple of years. You can compare deltas with our stats and everyone else but it gets a little tricky in doing so.

Here is the thing for me.....

An appearance in the CWS championship not withstanding, we have yet to have the type of regular season performance that I want to see. Sure we have turned it on at the end several times and made noise in the post-season. I want to see our program competing for NC for sure but also HOSTING regionals and supers. Comparing favorably or similar to last year to this year doesn't impress me much because we were not that great last year either. Even in our CWS runner-up year we only finished 2 games above .500 in conference play.

I'd be interested in seeing some peripheral stats for pitching. How about FIP, K/9, and BB/9 for pitching? Those statistics stabilize more quickly and will go farther in determining if the pitching staff really is worse than last year, or if they have just had bad luck. Same on offense with K% and BB%.
