Jay Marriotti was a disgrace, his entire shtick was to create false controversy.
As I said, I didn't like Jay Mariotti either. But the fact is, he was the only Chicago sportswriter now or then who had the balls to call out the owners in town with consistency. Ownership is the number one problem with the Bears and I don't care what anyone says.
Look at the difference in the Hawks. Bill Wurtz dies, Rocky takes over and it's as if that organization walked out of darkness into bright light. That team does well because they are committed to winning, first.
Look at the Cubs. Yeah, they had some good teams when the Tribune owned them. But I contend that things are different now. Much different. This year's team is better than any other Cub team I have ever seen. And they are going to be good for a while too.
We are not getting that with the Bears at all. We haven't been getting it for about 30 years either and really before that. They won a Super Bowl but when it came time to pay some players, that team was dismantled. And don't forget. Michael McCaskey swerved into the truth way back then when he said, "our goal is to be competitive." Translation: We want to win just enough to keep the stands near full in December...but not win the whole thing because then we would have to pay players and coaches more.
We can talk all we want about GMs, coaches and players, etc. but to me, for the most part, that conversation is a waste of time. It starts at the top.
