they will recommend he look around and if he wants to keep playing they will help him out, probably to lower division - this staff shouldn't be in a position to let him just ride it out, IMO, and likely won't

Despite losing his starting punter and kickoff duties, I was happy to see him be the first to congratulate and celebrate with Pickering when he made his field goals. There are quite a few players with scholarships that never got on the field today and may never in their career. As long as he is practicing hard and is involved, I don't think he needs to be shown the door. He has already started for over a year so it wouldn't hurt to have him around as a capable backup if something happens to our starters.

I agree with this. Plus he was put on scholarship due to an unfortunate circumstance. Stripping it Wouldn’t be the most professional thing to do. Just my opinion

Well, Caleb gave it his best shot, just didn't work out for him. Best of luck to him.

All Big Ten football scholarships are guaranteed for four years as long as it is not disciplinary.

BUT if he doesn't want to transfer out and forces your hand you are able to say that's fine but you wont play and we do not have to even suit you up. So your options are either stay on scholarship and be a spectator or we will put you on a medical scholarship or you should just transfer to a team that will play you.

There are ways around it but he could say no I am not leaving and deal with it.

He was a scholly guy from the get-go. Bruce Read & Co. wanted him bad and offered him.

Oh wow didn’t know but wouldn’t surprise me due to the stupid things our former staff did. Oh well, I believe our staff will honor it. He seems like a good teammate. Hell, I would love to be on scholly and get to hang out with Frost and get all that swag for free without ever having to worry about lifelong injuries.

No doubt we will continue to honor his scholarship. However, we will also sit down and talk to every player at year end like every other school does. We will tell him that he will not be playing next year and if he decides he wants to transfer to find playing time, we will be happy to help him find something more suitable for him.

I think Lightbourne is gone before next season. Not sure what happened to him. He had the talent IMO but somehow screwed it all up and pissed off Frost in the process. Must be some personal or off field issues going on in his life.

If he wants to transfer maybe Frost can take an opposite approach. Tell him he can ONLY transfer to teams we will play in a couple of years. Frost would love having him kick for our opponent

One problem is that there may not be a school out there willing to offer him a scholly, so he could be ‘stuck’.
If he stays, I’ll wish him the best to work his tail off and either win his job back or at minimum push the other guys around him.
It’s a little problematic to have the starter as a walkon and the upperclassman scholly guy sitting the bench. I dont think Frost could give Armstrong a scholly if Lightbourne still has one.

p.s. cheers to Pickering on gettin the job done today.

In addition to Lightbourne, Jordan ober is no longer the starting long snapper. Don't think I've seen it mentioned on here, since we are semi talking special teams.

Ober was the long snapper on the game winning FG. Maybe he doesn't do punts any more?

good point- Ober isn’t doing punt snaps cus coaches said Urbach is was better on downfield coverage (even got a fumble recovery).
Having schollys used on back up specialists hurts.
Hope we can get more quality walk-on specialists and then let them earn the scholly.
Personally, I think FG kicker has the most justification for a scholarship when there’s a talented kid to get, but we’ve seen some of those FG kickers also not be consistent starters ( Bondi, maybe Congdon).

Fair points. Both Bondi and Congdon transferred before exhausting their eligibility, Bondi to Hawaii and Congdon to USC.

He's a good kid with a big leg who was put in a difficult situation his freshman year. He's done his best and he hasn't "pissed off" Frost. Frost has tried to stick with him but Caleb just isn't able to locate his kicks or punts. I don't know if he stays or leaves but people need to be courteous to him. Good kid. No off field issues at all. Just hasn't developed and we don't have a special teams coach who can coach kickers like Scott Downing used to.

Urbach has three tackles (two solo) in addition to the fumble recovery.
