No assist for EJ?

Was watching the replay a little while ago & went to look at the box score of the Ole Miss game & saw that EJ has no assists in the official box score.

Anybody have any ideas why he didn't get an assist for the hustle play near the end? Fought for a tough rebound/loose ball, went to the ground & clearly gained possession on his back & threw a nice bounce pass to Maxey, who took 1 dribble & made the contested 2-footer.

I'm guessing assists are judgement calls of the official scorer, but you'd think being at home we'd get a friendly line. Not that it matters a lot (0 vs 1 assist) but would like to see a guy get rewarded a little more for some hustle.

My guess is because Maxey still had to create his own shot.

I don't think they typically give assists for plays like that

I’d say he made a pass that led immediately to a bucket... he gets an assist. Why would this not be an assist?

Yeah, if Max had pulled up immediately and drained it...assist to EJ.

EJ had a good game when he was on the left side of the floor & could use his dominant hand going to the middle
He has not been posted up on that side of the floor since & he has not had a good game since.

I kinda agree. I feel like EJ has assumed the role that Whitney was supposed to take on. Defensive stopper, rebounding, hustle plays, glue guy, etc.

I understand, but it's dumb logic. So if Maxey decides to be lazy and shoot the wide open 15 footer from the elbow, he gets an assist. But since Maxey was aggressive and took the 1 dribble to shoot the contested shot, no assist.
