And The Record can't serve as a counterbalance as they don't have a reporter assigned to Rutgers football. And to think at one point they had Aditi assigned to that job.

Yes, the impact of that garbage publication on NJ recruits and their parents has always been a problem.
I'll bet this never happens in Columbus, Lincoln, Madison, Iowa, etc.

You need to read the Lincoln paper more then. Steve Sipple who is the main sports writer is a Tom Osborne worshiper so he like Solich and blasted NU when they fired him and kept it up through the Callahan years and praised NU for having Osborne become the AD and then the hiring of Pelini. Now since he has been fired and Osborne was somewhat pushed out there is almost a dialy article about the faults(which there are many) in the NU program and the rest of the sports at NU. NU is in a constant spotlight in Nebraska and doesn't get a free pass from any of the local media.

Surprised to hear that... I thought being the only game in town the NU program was put on a pedestal in Lincoln. I don't know if you have many "local" recruits in Lincoln /Omaha that are negatively impacted year after year by the local newspapers. In New Jersey the scum paper Star Ledger has an agenda to undermine the Rutgers program. It's impact is known.

We get these threads telling recruits what to do constantly. Do you really think some kid is going to read this and think "hell yeah, I'm going to RU!"?

You want more top recruits, put the clown show that was Pernetti, Rice, Jordan, Flood, and Herman as far in the rear view mirror as possible and start winning some important games.

Rutgers has been it's own worst enemy for a very long time. I can't imagine there are other programs who have made as many major mistakes or shot itself in the foot as much as RU. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

If you think 17 and 18 year old kids care about what a newspaper thinks you are crazy. Very few people under 40 read newspapers anymore.

Or we can step it up as a fanbase and be more supportive in good times and in bad, donate money
and sellout every home game.

Which do you think will help more?[/QUOTE]

You're preaching to the choir.
Don't you think the vast majority on this board are already doing this ?

Many are but we need more. We need less blaming if the past and more positive actions going forward.

In general, the press are ambulance chasing embelishers of the truth that do anything to sell papers and get clicks.
That's everywhere!
The population loves train wrecks, it's the job of the press to give them to us even if they don't exist.
I would say at a 90% false to truth rate...that's how bad they are.

We can blame the ledger. We can blame former HCs, OCs and DCs.

in the Rutgers world, you need to win first, for the most part.... yes, we can increase donations somewhat with very good marketing, but you will get much more support and sellouts, when we
win

just like the basketball fans on the bb board, who lament the lack of fannies in the seat.... you must win first and then they will come.... the excellent start against poor competition is not quite enough to rally the support a lot.... but it is trending up a bit

It is true that winning solves a lot of problems, but the Star Ledger's most anti-RU attacks were launched after Schiano turned things around. When Rutgers isn't winning, you get snark. When they are winning, you get blatant attempts to destroy the program.

I also hate the newspapers...... I don't know how much that affects attendance.... I think they are separate issues

Not true. They do have a Rutgers beat writer. He had covered the Jets and Seton Hall hoops before Rutgers.

Recruits are not swayed by nj.com or Star Ledger or Courier Post. They are swayed by success, stain ,brand , facilities and what we do on the field .

Personally think more top NJ kids will wake up when their schollies go to top kids out of state and not them.

They'll realize they don't jump on the boat it is going to sail without them
