Doesn't matter if he starts or not. Good luck getting a touch on a team full of shoot first players with no true point guard.

DomHawk could possibly go on an academic scholly for 2 semesters

I would think that Duke would have someone that could do that also.
Their board keeps suggesting that Thorton will leave, somewhat like some here would dump Lee.

Possibly, but the dookies academic requirements for an academic schollie are likely tougher to attain.

The bigger question is why would Bolden commit to a part-time off the bench role, as opposed to a practically sure-fire starting position?

How so? Saying he doesnt posses wing qualities??

Nothing outrageous with that considering its true. no clue why fans continue try to make him out to be something he;s not.

He's a PF.
I haven't been able to watch him so I don't have a dog in this fight but......Cal and Gabriel have both stated that Gabriel will play the three next year . So it's not just fans making him out to be a three .

I just watched the replay on ESPN 3. Fox looked great at the beginning, Tatum took a couple cheap shots elbowing the defender in the face like a typ dirty Dukie, Ferguson is a great 3 point shooter and defender, and was really impressed with Fultz.

Pretty sure if you recruit a player as a scholarship player that status can't change. Even if Hawk had an academic scholarship it would still count against the 13. He can't go from scholarship to walk on status.

I'm pretty sure an academic scholly would fly if he has and maintains a 3.50 GPA
and if not, there's always an option to red-shirt someone.

True, and who exactly are the complimentary/role players going to be for Duke? Allen thinks shoot-first. Thornton thinks shoot-first. Jackson thinks shoot-first. Tatum thinks shoot-first. Taking all of that into consideration, Duke will still have the Giles element and try to keep him well fed on the low block.

Could get interesting for guys like Kennard and Jones; particularly Jones, who has shown incredible loyalty to the Duke program and was a starter for their national title team. Now, are we to suspect K will play Jackson, Tatum, Allen, and Kennard over Jones?

I'm guessing there is some serious discontent before it's all said and done. K recruited most of these guys based on the assumption that they'd all see minutes this year. A guy like Tatum playing with a guy like Allen is the kind of thing that looks great on paper, but also creates a massive headache for a coach trying to figure out a way to win 6 straight games in March/April.

I can see some major issues with that team.. Have to wait and see.

Seems like ever year this comes up. Regulars should know this by now. If you are on an athletic scholarship you can't free up a slot by going to an academic scholarship. You still count towards the limit.

LOL people bashed Fox all MCD game and they will love on him today and neither game means jack .

Didn't see this game and only saw the second half of the McDonald's game, but this isn't just limited to Kentucky fans. Duke fans were bashing Tatum after the McDonald's game on Duke's scout board while anointing Jackson as a world beater. Tatum did fine just looking at the box score while Jackson didn't make a shot. Gonna be an overreaction from our fans tonight about Jackson lol.

I didn't realize that Thon Maker is going pro.

I knew he was trying, didn't know he was officially eligible yet.

World team needs Murray!

That was the first thing I thought when looking at the box score.

Hate to say this but fox and 6'7 Ferguson would of given Murray fits.

God I wish we could land Ferguson , 6'7 shooting guard that's fast and agile , can stroke the 3 and being tall he can alter shots of the shorter guards... But noooooo. He has to be playing at the one school Cal won't recruit from.... It's like God is toying with my heart lol

I don't think a player can go to academic scholarship, he can go to paying his own way and taking financial aid if eligible.

You're right, it's 13 total schollies, regardless of source. Look for Obi to apply for medical hardship as his knees are shot and if be surprised if he plays any further.

Remind me of Foreal's unique situation. can't he attend UK free because his father is track coach?

I expect to see a lineup with Fox, Monk, Gabriel, Willis, and Bam on the floor together.

Who guards the three in that lineup?

I could see Gabriel playing a lot of 4 with Fox, Monk, and Briscoe beside him IF either Briscoe or Gabriel shows themselves capable from the three point line.

If we nab Bolden, I can also see Bolden, Bam, Gabriel on the floor together. Again, who guards the three?

Knowing what we know about next year's roster, and knowing what Cal is still trying to do with the roster, it would be foolish to not expect Gabriel at the three a good bit.

That was the first thing I thought when looking at the box score.

Thon Maker is trying to go pro.

He is saying that he graduated in 2015.

Others are saying that he started HS in 2013, making 2016 his final year.

If he's denied, he could end up in Europe or the D-League.

He hasn't hired an agent yet, so presumably he could still go to college, but that definitely isn't in his plans at the moment. He plans to sign with an agent as soon as the NBA approves him for the draft.

For those that were losing it over Frank Jackson's shooting in the McDonald's game, I think he was 0-5 from 3 in this one. I nodded off a few times, so that may be off a little bit.

Also, I think Monk, Tatum, Josh Jackson and Ferguson sat out the entire 4th quarter. Seemed like that Pritchard played almost the entire 2nd half.
Yeah Monk sat out the whole 4th quarter and 3rd and 2nd and the 1st, cause he wasn't even there.

That's fine, so long as he doesn't go to Kansas. I want their fans to feel the sting of multiple player departures without a replenishment of talent.

He clearly is planning to not go to college. If he gets a bad answer, I'm sure several will be scrambling to get him on campus.

You think Kansas gets Jackson? This will sound like sour grapes, but something seems a little off about that kid. Great player, for sure.

All I know is that at one point I was worried about them getting Maker, Jackson and Ferguson. Now it appears they will only get one of them, if that. I do think they will Jackson though, and I wouldn't discount Ferguson ending up back at Alabama.

Didn't watch but that would make the second allstar game Fultz was impressive in . I wanted him at UK the guy is very smooth . Having Fox and Monk eases the pain of not getting him for me though

Yeah, I think KU lands Jackson. Mason, Graham, and Jackson will be formidable, and Bragg is solid, but I think they'd abused down low. Azubuike won't be ready from day-one.

I'm still hoping, however, that Jackson goes overseas and leaves KU high and dry.

Yeah, KU's frontcourt is gonna take a big hit without Ellis, Diallo, Traylor, and Mickelson. Will have Lucas, Bragg and Azubuike. Plenty of teams would kill for that trio, but don't think it's enough for them. Well, enough to win the B-12, which is all they care about.

there is nothing wrong with Jackson. If Kansas gets him they are getting a gift a la Wiggins. I hope he goes to MSU.

What a mess. I'd hate to have to be one of the people having to sort through that and come up with a conclusion. One thing I'll say is I think it's a good move on his part to try and be eligible for this draft given that this isn't a strong draft class. He's tall, but needs to put on a lot of weight and I don't think he's particularly polished offensively from what I've read. Better for him to maximize his potential in a weak draft instead of possibly being exposed in college with a stronger draft class in 2017 looming.

11. Wenyen Gabriel

Gabriel has an interesting baseline skill-set with his defensive versatility potential, high energy play and promising open catch and shoot 3 ability off the catch. At 6’9.25 with 7’1” wingspan, Gabriel has the size, feet and athleticism to defend multiple positions on switches etc, which seems to be his primary calling card. He’s essentially an energy guy at this point who attacks the glass with a great second jump and defends at a high level. Offensively, Gabriel is more much raw. He can make an open 3 off the catch when it’s wide open, but seems to falter over contests. He has absolutely nothing off the bounce as he can’t dribble or create, so at this juncture there is nothing promising to bank on in terms of a playmaking four with his apparent lack of feel as well. It’s been reported Coach Cal could play Gabriel on the wing at Kentucky, which has unmitigated disaster written all over it. He looks like an offensive four where his game is contingent on developing a consistent jumper and some semblance of ball-skills.

Man I sure hope cal checks in with this guy before each season to understand the strengths of his incoming freshman.
