This might be a way around the "Johnny Juzang" transfer problem.

Get guys to come here through a transfer, have them sit out a year and learn the system, and then when they actually play, they're effectively already an "experienced" player.

Seems like a positive from that end. If they pass the immediate transfer rule, it's still a positive because you're getting an experienced college-level player.

I like it and I hope it becomes a trend.
I agree and I think it may also signal a change in his one recruiting pitch fits all strategy. It’s been apparent that we sign recruits with a recruiting pitch centered around becoming NBA players with player development tailored to that goal. That’s how we get kids to come here and that’s why they leave so soon because the NBA was always the true goal. However if we have started recruiting players who on paper are a long shot to be NBA players with a pitch of come transfer here and play against the best and see how much your skills can grow and still get paid to play basketball someday just maybe not in the United States. I think our retention rate will improve. The focus shifts from a primary goal of just NBA as fast as possible towards a longer term development of basketball skill model.

We have Allen that will do that for us this year. Has been learning the play's for a year and come in healthy. i expect him to be a very good player for us this year.
If he has no lingering issues with the surgery, I don't expect it, he will be a fan favorite. Most don't know how good he is. And he does it all, not just a sharpshooter.

Kid looks like a mid major Malik Monk, no?

6’4, scorer, uses great hops to get jumpers and tough finishes, streaky shooter borderline out of control at times...

think he’d be great to have and develop.

This is the kind of PG i wish we had on the roster on a yearly basis. This kid seems to look to play with an attitude by driving to the hoop and wanting to dunk the ball down the defenders throat. He shot looks damn good to me and from the highlights ive watched he actually rim runs and looks for a lob being thrown to jam. Whens the last time we had a PG that could drive, dunk and shoot like this kid? Seems like hes definitely worthy of a scholarship in my opinion.

If we sign this kid and Anselem, that leaves us 1 scholarship left.

And Cal never uses all 13.

We could have our roster set soon. 10 deep with two transfers likely sitting out (Sibande and Toppin).

If that happens, it could be the oddest roster Cal has ever put together.
Apparently he’s looking to add two more bigs.

Am I forgetting someone or would this addition actually leave us with two more spots?
I don't think Toppin would be eligible if the immediate transfer rule doesn't pass and it looks like it won't now. That leaves us currently with 9 scholarship players.

They also find the most ridiculous ways to spell common names like John or Susan. It's like they try to outdo their friends in the weirdest kid name competition.

I like this new direction. We need more multi-year guys on the roster that will stick with us, yet are talented enough to make major contributions to the program. I don't give a damn if some of them aren't future NBA all-star type talents. What we need are some experienced guys that are really good COLLEGE BASKETBALL players.

Well you better develop him quick, as he will only have one year remaining.
