Nick Richards - Major factor?

As fans we are free to speculate so... How big a factor do you believe Richards will play on this years team? The way that we like to play defense and funnel everything to a shot blocker makes me thing he will be a major factor - especially if he has developed as much as it appears. In big games I look for him to get at least 25 minutes of clock and could ultimately be a difference maker.

My bet is his year ending numbers will be 11 pts/8 rebounds with about 80 blocks for the year. All of this in about 23 minutes of game time. Thoughts?

Yeah I think he will be around the 10/8/3 average a game. and he will do this like you said in around 25 minutes .

He had what USED to be considered a typical freshman year. I agree, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him average just shy of a double-double and 2-3 blocks.

Kyle tucker tweeted that based on his info four of the starting spots are set

Quickley
Johnson
PJ
Reid

Last spot seems to be between Quade and Herro, my guess is Quade but I also thought Cal would stick with Nick starting. I still think the Bahamas starting unit starts but Kyle has more info than I ever could so I’m likely wrong.

After watching Nick This summer I’m shocked he isn’t a lock to start but I guess it doesn’t matter since Reid was going to play a lot anyway and This probably doesn’t change how many minutes Nick was going to already get. I think he averages about 8pts 7reb 1.6blks

I expect him to play a large role. Many forget that players take their biggest leap in improvement between freshman and sophomore year. The only thing is, we don't get to see it all that often so we don't know, lol. If he brings constant energy and activity, and can be a decent rim protector, that will be great. The majority of his offense will come from lobs and offensive rebounds/putbacks.

I agree w/ you and think Tucker's wrong. Nick will start over Travis (who'll get starters minutes either way) just for the sake of his confidence. He's showing too much improvement to reward his hard work with a "demotion", IMO.

OP ... please forgive me, but you have brought forth one of my biggest pet peeves. I know that the malapropism that you wrote is now common in sports media, and indeed, in society in general . . . but that doesn't make it right. I mean no offense, but -- Richards may "play" a big "role" on this year's team (the phrase "play a role" have been taken, of course, from movies and theater). Richards may also "be" a "factor" in the course of this year's season. But he will either "be a factor" (that is, make a difference, etc.) or he "will not be a factor." My pet peeve is when folks nonsensically conflate the phrases "will play a role" and "will be a factor."

Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. And I'm sure that the anti-grammar-police hit-quad will scald me by making me walk through hot coals because I raised the issue.

12 and 5 per game. More than sufficient with Reid leading the team in rebounds.
Really? See I figured he’d kinda split the 2. Like 9 and 8 or so. With the shooters they have this year, I figure most of his scoring will just come from putbacks & lobs.

Kentucky has so many offensive weapons this year. If Richards averages 12 and 8, which is possible, we will be nearly unbeatable.

You won’t hear from the anti-grammar police. Your grammar was great. As was OP’s. It’s just a weird peeve you have.

How is it terrible when the first unit likely doesn’t need scoring AND Quade already knows what to expect vs college competition, on top of helping a new pg learn the pg position? If Quade was bad then I’d agree but he’s good enough to give you double figures every night while helping in the PG duties PLUS you see how hints worked with him starting in the Bahamas and how it didn’t affect Herro’s game right?

Now if Herro starts I won’t have a issue if UK still thrives but I already “know” they will thrive with Quade starting (as much as you can know at this point) so why tilt the cart. I have the same logic with Nick starting

I think so too. I actually think Tucker jumped to conclusions. Iirc he was told those four were separating themselves. He then assumed it meant they were starters.

I think it'll be quickly, quade, kj, pj, Nick.

Then subbed by Ashton, Tyler, baker (maybe sparingly), Travis and ej.

That essentially subs player for player by style (except baker). I think pj and Reid will finish games. I just don't see them starting. Because that would require Nick and ej being together. Not a bad combo, but not necessarily complimentary in terms of attributes

Because Quade is clearly 4best out of our 5 guards. Quickly, Hagansand Hero bring a lot more to the table at every level besides experience. I’m not saying Quade doesn’t deserve 20 or more iTunes backing up both guard spots but he isn’t nearly the talent the other 3 are.

But couldn't you argue that instead of being a malapropism of "play a role" that it is a riff on the phrase "factors at play"? If a factor can be at play then something could "play a factor"? right?

I like Richards starting at the 5 as he provides us a rim protector that no one else on this team can. I like PJ, Keldon, Quade, and Quickley to start as well at the beginning of the year until Herro gets some game experience and has made the transition on the defensive side.

I’ll say the same thing I said last year. Nick has the highest upside on the team but is the farthest from reaching it. Now, he’s taken a big step and if he takes about 2-3 more big steps he’s going to be be one of those dudes in the NBA who everyone says “Where did that guy come from and how did he not dominate in college?” Nick has to learn that he doesn’t have to play the same game as everyone else. They should be reacting to him. With his size strength and athleticism, nobody will be able to guard him and there’s no one he can’t defend when he figures it out.

https://ukathletics.com/documents/2018/10/8/1819_NBA_COMBINE_MEASUREMENT_CHARTS.pdf

I’m sorry but these measurables are insane. He jumps as high as Keldon Johnson, he’s as strong as Reid Travis, a wing span .5 from Anthony Davis, his 3/4 spring is more similar to SF and his Shuttle agility is the 3rd best on the team. Those are freak measurements. The only question is can he learn what to do with them. In my opinion, all indications seem to be yeas at this point, based on development.

I think we are over thinking the starters because at the end of the day there are a lot of players getting time on this team. For one thing this year, officiating will affect us less then any year except 2015. Zone defenses are not going to affect us which means that we will see a lot of man to man that is a positive for us. And last we have more experience for road games that should benefit us greatly especially in the SEC.
