And yet another example of a guy who was just okay at NU but who goes onto the pros and looks pretty damn good.

Good for him. Too bad incompetent former coaches held him back while he was here. Hope he has a successful career in the NFL!

can't say im suprised. he was hyped for a reason, so either he had bad coaching, or didn't put in the effort till he got paid. Who knows, but still wish him well.

#1. He's in shape, speaks to the loafing post above.
#2. Deep problem at Nebraska getting the most out of guys in college. We have had a few guys show and prove in the pros, but sucked in Lincoln.

This guy is the Case Study. He was fat and lazy while here, nothing more to say than that. He flashed enough to get a free agent signing then finally showed up in NY.

It's interesting to me that he is playing right tackle in the NFL. After hearing Husker experts for years talk about how much better he would be at the college level if he didn't have to play out of position at right, then left tackle. But now he's getting a shot in the NFL at right tackle and doing well. It goes to show you that if you are not 6'7" and playing tackle, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are playing out of position.

you nailed it .

Nick Gates is the poster Child of the Mike Riley period of Nebraska. Came to Nebraska with so much talent but just didn’t put the time into the S&C. If he comes up with any other line coach in our history, Gates is easily two time all conference and very possibly an All- American. He’s the kid that so many former Huskers ripped about his lack of accountability in the weight room.

Meh. He's just another Barney recruit who had great talent, battled through multiple injuries and multiple coaches and offenses to eventually make it in the NFL. I'm telling you Barney was a better O line recruiter and coach than he got credit for. Switching from the Beck spread to Riley's WCO was not a particularly easy task and he was probably our best O lineman his last 2 years here. Good for him. IMO anybody who calls him lazy is ignorant.

Barney was one helluva evaluator, and its kind of ridiculous to think Nebraska replaced him with Cavanaugh. Barney would've definitely stayed on if offered.

IMO, in hindsight I would have rather had Barney or Beck lead our program than Riley. If we had cleaned house on D, maybe gotten Beck to stay on for continuity, and put a good staff together on the defensive side, I think we could have kept 9 wins seasons rolling. JMHO. Beck was a well organized and good recruiter with deep contacts in Texas. The key would have been finding an equally connected guy for the defensive side who could recruit talent rich areas. We're paying a horrible price right now for a messy divorce and bad rebound hire.

“Meh” sure the ex football player All- American that pointed this out is ignorant. Fat stomachs don’t lie. Love handles don’t lie. The out of shape body doesn’t lie.

That's what coaching is... getting the most out of your players. I don't know exactly what Ferguson's problem was this year, but he did play well last year and should have been a major contributor this year. We can't just give special treatment to guys like Maurice Washington. Sometimes guys with less talent than that need a little attention too and if you keep them happy they can be solid contributors. I don't think just writing guys off as lazy is always the answer. Yeah sometimes players need a little extra motivation and convincing to give the effort level they should be at. Our coaching staff should find ways to make sure guys are giving solid effort and that guys aren't slipping through the cracks.

it's pretty hard for just about any interior lineman to stay ripped when they injured most of fall camp and the preseason. He played at less than 90% in 2 years due to a severely sprained ankle. Last time I checked, Baltimore's offensive line has fat asses and big guts and they seem to play just fine. Dave Rimmington wasn't exactly trim. He looked like the Pillsbury dough boy but man could he play. Just stop. The guy played his *** off when he was here and he was probably our best O linemen even at less than 90% healthy. There were games where the guy could hardly walk and he soldiered on. Anybody taking shots at him now is an *******.

Having sat next to or stood next to Dave Rimington on a few occasions in college, I can attest that he was hardly fat. He was a big human being with thighs the size of tree trunks.

He had a belly but had the benefit of Boyd's "vitamins". An old ex friend of mine, Brad Johnson was his backup.

Hindsight being 20/20 that sounds good, but imagine the fan base even hearing Tim Beck's name even being in "consideration" for the NU head coaching job.......lol. This board would have short circuited....

There are reactionaries everywhere. Beck was very organized, a good recruiter and would have run a good program. He's suffered from head coaches messing with his offenses at several stops including Ohio State. The best offense OSU had during Meyers' tenure was when Meyers was suspended. Beck was not great with the media but Bo's meddling in what he wanted to do offensively really handcuffed him IMO. Then having a lunatic screaming in your headphones had to make it tough to call plays. The best I saw our team come out and play was the 2nd half of that game when they took Bo to the hospital because he had a cardac arrhythmia from drinking too much Redbull. Both Beck and Papuchis could operate without Bo screaming at them. Sometimes a head coach needs to intervene but man sometimes they can't get out of their own way.

Interior line? He played Tackle at Nebraska. Let’s get the position straight before we name him the GOAT. so how about you “just stop”.

and as already posted, Dave R was not out of shape.

And if Nick was always hurt during prime S&C time, why’d the hell did he play?!?! Walters has a no block no rock clause. The Oline needs a no bench no trench clause

I didn't say he that he didn't play tackle. Get YOUR facts straight. I was around Rimmington too. The guy was not lean. Period. Go back and look at the pictures his last year.

Nick played because even at less than full speed he was our best O linemen and had a great motor. The depth behind him if I recall correctly was not great. So you wouldn't play you best O linemen because he couldn't participate fully in practices? Well okie dokie.
