I think the Cutcliffe connection with the Mannings is a factor. Jones will sit patiently behind Eli for one or two years and not make waves.

Jones will be a very good starter for them sooner rather than later. Accurate and mobile. I doubt he would have been on the board past the #10 or 11 pick if the Giants had passed.

That’s an unusual take: I never thought he was particularly good and was surprised by all the hype. He strikes me as a player that needs a lot of development, and the Giants have been a hot mess lately.

At least they didn’t trade up to draft an underwhelming QB, like the Bills or Bears have done recently. It’s surprising how many bad QBs are still selected in the top 10.

I didn't watch a single play of theirs, but they look like they got bloated on cupcakes, with a couple of impressive wins in there too. More directly, I'd be a little worried if I was their fan base, losing 3 top picks from a mediocre team

I'm guessing you didn't watch that game. Iowa had <200 yds total offense (-15 rushing), 75 (passing TD) came on one play. It was total domination by the Miss St defense. I have no idea how they lost that game (and lost me $$).

It’s such a crap shot. Get the franchise QB and barring injury, your team is a contender for a decade. Get the wrong QB in the top 10, and as a general manager or coach, you should be updating your resume. Same with if you don’t get a franchise QB via lower draft picks, free agency, or trade.

It makes not taking a potential franchise QB if you’re bad enough to be a top 10 pick team, difficult to pass.

He is accurate and mobile, the two most important traits for a QB in modern day football. Same goes for Trubisky, who by the way made a pro bowl and only showed a fraction of the talent that will be on full display next year. There were several reports from insiders that Cleveland was actively trying to trade up for that pick to take Ohio boy, Mitch Trubisky.

I didn’t say Pace fleeced Lynch, he gave up fair compensation to insure he got his guy. I am just providing evidence to contest the original narrative that Pace was the one that got fleeced. That was the erroneous consensus at the time.

Totally agree. The challenge is knowing when the player you are trading to get is transformational enough over the player you could otherwise have gotten/will play in the position to merit the cost. Aaron Donald is obviously that kind of transformational difference maker. The jury is still out on Mitch. And I don't think most talent evaluators have the kind of certainty about their convictions in projecting talent that we might hope.

There's no such thing as a sure thing. That's what makes this fun/excruciating.

That conviction better be 100% right. The Ricky Williams trade by the Saints set them back years. The Vikings deal for Hershel Walker set the Cowboys up as a dynasty and Vikings never made a SB with Walker. These are two of the worst trades in the history of the NFL.

Fant is a great athlete, but his blocking is suspect, and if your going to be a TE at Iowa you'd better be able to block. This is why Hockenson went higher because he is a complete TE kind of in the mold of George Kittle who is with the 49ers now. Fant did not play as many snaps because Hock and the other TE they had were much better blockers. For me, I would have kept Fant on the field and just split him out and let his 4.5 speed take a LB out of the middle when running the ball. You can't teach 4.5 speed to most TE's. LOL

the Bears were targeting Donald. He fit a need and they correctly concluded he was a special player. If you feel that way, why take the risk that someone will take him one pick before your turn? When you feel that way, I am an advocate for making certain you get him even if you have to use an extra pick or two to go get hm.
