Next Husker to declare for NFL early?

I see another OU lineman has declared early. They now have one returning starter, the center.

Strange problem to have and made me wonder which Husker both currently on the roster and signed will leave for the NFL early - if anyone?

Would that be a sign we are getting/developing better talent?

Jaimes might be the most likely after this next year.

Well, I didn’t post specifically about OU, but as an example of players leaving early for the NFL. That made me wonder when/if we will have some players in that same situation.

I never understood why people saw this as a sign of success. You want your best players to stay another year, not leave for the draft right as they start to contribute for your team. Look at Cristian Wilkins at Clemson. I'd take a guy like that who's a beast by his senior year over a guy who has one good year and is off to the NFL.

There were a lot of issues when Mike Anderson was the head baseball coach, but one year there was a mass exodus to the MLB draft of both draft-eligible non-seniors and high school players going pro rather than going to college. Was really the beginning of the end for Anderson as it decimated his pitching staff.

Regarding football, I think there is a paradigm shift whereby you have to have the mentality that elite recruits will only be around for three seasons and anything more is gravy. When you are good enough at recruiting, there are players who can backfill those departing players effectively.

Well, I don't know how to help you then. You are mixing personal goals with team goals and they do not always mesh. Show me a kid who plays FB that doesn't want to play in the league. Shoot, we have a small NAIA school and everyone of those kids in basketball and football still have that as a goal. If a kid wants to stay for his senior year, that is great but if he has been developed and wants to go pro, that is his choice again. As far as being successful - the school was successful by having the kid go there in the first place, play and make an impact while the kid gets to fulfill his dream. I don't get your thinking on this.

I just hope our coaches don't do this when players decide to leave early...

That was kind of my thinking as well, but with the coaching stability (hopefully) we won’t see guys leaving early just to leave.

JD would be the only one next year with the grade to really consider coming out early...and with his dad's NFL connections he would get taken by someone if not Minnesota. If he stays healthy and has a good year I could see this as a possibility.

Reread the thread title. This isn’t about transfers. It’s about declaring early for the NFL.

Washington and martinez...the guy to leave early will be a frost recruit. It is a combo of talent and production. It IS a good sign for you program bc guys are talented enough to get drafted early. Guys like clemson DT are a rare situation..first round draft picks that return to school. You recruit the best players you can..cant worry about getting guys who can leave early.

The only problem for us is that Jaimes has played against some really good competition and he's held up well at left tackle. IF he has another good year, he's going to be really high on some draft boards I'm afraid. Left tackles can make a ton of money.

I think this is what is going to make it very hard for Neb to consistently compete for Conf Championships and NC. Places like Ohios St, Mich, Bama ect. Have a constant flow of elite talent to replace the guys who leave early for the NFL. Nebraska doesn't, so when we lose a top level talent guy we don't have and equally as talented guy waiting to replace.

The question was who would be the next one to leave early though and I think there's a real shot that Jaimes could be an early round pick next spring if he would decide to leave. Hopefully he stays for 4. I don't discount the idea that Martinez could leave early too though at all.

I hope. I went back and looked and recruiting rankings, and it does seem to follow success. Even Bama in the early 2000's before Saban, was recruiting in the 20's high teens. So very similar to us. Ohio St seems to be different, they can consistently get top 10 top 5 classes for the last 20 years pretty consistently.
