Vogel Hurley Oats Lloyd that’s my Top 4 but really believe that Holtmann gets it. Hope it works out whoever it is.
Win 3 more.If you can win 2 titles at Villanova then what could you do at UK???
That's my list. Only thing that worries me about Wright is while he's a great coach, is he a three or four title coach? Most modern, elite coaches stop at two. Give me a hungry coach who hasn't been there yet but is a hot name with a ton of energy - that's Bruce Pearl. And no one here should complain about him. Some here thought Cal cheated at Memphis but was St. John here. Some Louisville fans thought Pitino cheated here but was St. Rick there. Hypocrisy is required if you're a sports fan. Just need Cal to do whatever he's gonna do with next year's team, walk away (hopefully Mitch retires too), hire a non stick-in-the-mud AD, then we roll with Pearl.Jay Wright or Bruce Pearl
I know I know, Pearl this and Pearl that, but many thought the same about Calipari.
Bruce Pearl would absolutely kill it at UK, as would Wright and a few others. I’m not the least concerned with who the new coach will be, my concern is how ugly is Cal going to make the divorce in the meantime.
I didn’t say I disagreed. I was just trying to show how preposterous it is to think Barnhart would consider bringing Pitino back.So why don't you explain to us what is wrong with having some religous morals?
That's right!
AgreeLet’s examine this after we play both of them and see exactly how they look.
I just don't want either one of them as our next head coach. If it happens and one of them becomes our next head coach, I will be behind them 100%.I don’t think oats is a cal clone just because oats has embraced the 3 and loves to play up tempo. That’s why we handled his buffalo team in 2018. They tried to run with us when we had superior talent at every position.
Musselman on the other hand…i agrée whole heartedly. Ive watched arkansas and he reminds me so much of Cal especially on offense. It’s often a bunch of guys standing around while one guy tries to take his man off the dribble. I’m just not super impressed with musselman. I think he is a good but not great coach.
Really like McDermott too. Has a good team every year with 3* players that really play well together. My initial choice is Frank Vogel but would definitely have Mac on the list.No clear cut choice. I would look at Mac D the Creighton coach. Scott drew is my choicz
He is retired for a reason. Did you read the article on why he retired? If you can win 2 titles at Villanova then what could you do at UK???
I agree with everything you just said. You have to make Stevens, Jay Wright, and Donovan (yes, again) turn you down. You have to. They are the 3 best. Doesn’t matter if all 3 are a pipe dream. Throw everything and the kitchen sink at them.
After that it’s Drew, Lloyd, Oates in that order.
My thinking as well, prolly have a couple games where we go “okay, we are better and I can see us making a run.” Then right after we will lose to Vandy on the road by 12.Agree
They could probably play with their off hand and beat us! We may surprise one of the top SEC teams but we will probably be beaten by a couple of the lower echelon teams too.
I think Lloyd would be a fantastic hire. His style is fun, they play hard and smart. He learned under a great offensive coach. His age is perfect and he has a ton of experience as a top assistant and now at a school just below the level of the blue bloods.I agree with everything you just said.
According to who?Kentucky is the hardest job to turn down in all of sports arguably.
The guy is in the NBA coaching carousel. His ship has sailed. The Bulls are about to blow it all up, what they assembled is not working .He would have to be the first call.
I can appreciate him wanting to spend time with family. Really. Maybe he will decide he has more gas in the tank. Maybe his family would like to live in KY. Hell , I don’t know. One can hope.He is retired for a reason. Did you read the article on why he retired?
Jay Wright retired because he felt it was his time to retire. He didn't have the same edge and energy that he once had. If he was losing that energy at Villanova, do you think someone, at his age would want to come to a place like UK?You reach for Jay Wright. That’s your number one guy.
If that falls through, you vet Musselman, Lloyd, Oats, and Hurley. One of those five will both accept and be the right guy. It’s about finding which one.
I do think Hurley would be a great coach here. I love his fire and the success he’s had along the way.
He would only take the job if he felt he had the energy to win at the highest level. It would be self-selecting in that way. Also, sometimes people need a change of scenery after having been at the same place for a long time. There are many examples of people who left somewhere, took a quick break, then had massive success somewhere else. Urban Meyer Florida—>retired—>Ohio State is just the first off the top of my mind. Lastly, it’s possible he left Villanova for a different reason. As a small, basketball only school in a pro sports city, Villanova isn’t in a great position with super conferences and NIL emerging as factors.Jay Wright retired because he felt it was his time to retire. He didn't have the same edge and energy that he once had. If he was losing that energy at Villanova, do you think someone, at his age would want to come to a place like UK?
I think everyone is wanting a young Rick Pitino (not Richard), and there's not one out there right now.I desperately just want someone that plays an entertaining style

Safe hire: Tony Bennett
Yes, he plays a boring brand of basketball. And yes, he's underachieved quite a bit in the tournament. However, he does win and has zero scandal (that I know of). I just don't see anyone else out there that is reasonable and guaranteed.
So, just out of curiosity, are you keeping Cal over those three?Nate Oats has never been past a SW16. What is supposed to be exciting about that? He teams chuck a bunch of 3's and hope they are on that night. No thanks!
Musselman is an interesting one to watch, but his age works against him.
Scott Drew has been past the sw16 3 times in 20 years. Only once since 2012. Hell no!!!!
I would hire the leader of the Taliban over Cal. Get Cal’s *** out of here as soon as the season is over, regardless of finish. So, just out of curiosity, are you keeping Cal over those three?
At the current payout price? Yea. That's kind of a no brainer. I think there are better names that could be more worth paying it for. Musselman is the only one of those 3 I would consider, and the buyout would need to be in the 15 million or less range to justify paying it to hire him.So, just out of curiosity, are you keeping Cal over those three?
Same to you and your family.Hope you and your family have a Happy New Year.
I’d take Pearl in a heartbeat. He’s a good coach and would absolutely inject some life back into this program. He is definitely one of the few guys out there that I think could handle the job.As much as I don't like Pearl, and not advocating for him, he does strike me as the kinda of guy that could handle the job and fans would actually enjoy watching his teams.

1998 Kentucky Alum, NBA champion coach.
Donovan was one of the first offered after Tubby left. You can't blame the guy though, he just came off back-to-back championships at Florida.Donovan. We'd have had 4 or more titles with him coaching the same talent Cal had. Should have offered him the job instead of bcg. Ship's probably sailed on that, though.
Got to find a coach that not only doesn't hate the brand, but loves the tradition and the fan support, wants to win every game every year, and knows basketball well enough to tailor the offense to what their strengths are. Do those even exist anymore?
Call Mussleman, Lloyd, Drew, Pitino, Oats, Donovan, Stevens
Why would any of these coaches want to be associated with this fan base? They’re making millions elsewhere and their current schools will offer them a raise to keep them. The UK fan base have made this job too toxic for a really good coach to want it. I predict a Billy G type candidate that flames out after a few miserable seasons. This can’t be a mess up. We need to transition right back to where we were in cals early years. I think Nate Oates is the guy to pick it right back up. I’d be fine with mussleman but I think Oates is the guy
Resume and he's a UK guy. And relatively young.Wow. That's a resume. Seems like the only reason he was fired from 2 jobs was injuries to key players and timing. Facing the stacked Heat a few years kept him from another title shot. Davis and James being chronically hurt after winning a title wasn't a Vogel issue, but a player or GM issue.
Shows how little I know the NBA, but I had no idea he coached the Lakers to a title. No idea at all.
He looks like a great candidate based on resume.
