Not Tranchina related but apparently the Tulsa World let Guerin Emig go. A little shocking in that he's been there a long time and certainly longer than Tranchina and Kelly Hines so not your traditional downsizing. Emig was always hit or miss for me. There were times he wrote some excellent articles about TU and other topics, and there were times I felt he got possessed by Haisten and wrote an article that was a backhanded slap at TU while trying to maintain the "This is great" fake smile.
That’s unfortunate. He was one of the better writers they had, but newspapers are in their death spiral.

World didn't have anyone there Wednesday or Saturday. I'll bet Tranchina would have covered those games if he was healthy, although the World has missed covering some early season games in the past. Tranchina is a really good guy. Good writer.
Yeah I was surprised to see no one at the games for the TW lately.

So where is Tranchina going to be assigned to when he gets well? Or is he already well?

I’m probably in the minority (from what it seems), but I always thought Kelly did a good job on the beat. Is she Eric Bailey? Nope. But I think she’s a better option than those two little twig boys we had at one point or another previously.

Future articles on what foods our players like but very little on why our full court zone press is so soft.

Wish we had someone like Pete Prisco who got the Tribune banned at TU for stating that Nolan was coaching like a rock not moving out of his seat on the bench. It was Nolan’s last year and his daughter was dying so though deserved, was probably not an appropriate time to say that.

He questioned Nolan’s coaching several times and had no fluffy articles. Prisco now a Senior NFL columnist for CBS. He would have been blasting Wojcik and Haith every week at the Tribune. 😀 Sorry for basketball examples on the football board.

I do understand some of the criticism though. Some of her pieces are kind of lame/useless. But as far as her social media presence and access at TU, she’s not bad.
That is where I am at. I dont read the world but I am on Social Media and I get a lot of information from her there. I didnt get that much from the others.

Tranchina had a great deal of energy in his work and liked to dive into details. I wonder if that translates into clicks in our market?

TW sports needs to do something different for subscriptions and clicks because most of the information they provide can be found for free elsewhere. For example, I’d be happy to pay a subscription for access to Kelli breaking down big plays(the coverages, blocking concepts, QB reads, etc.) from this week’s game with an ex/current HS or college coach. Maybe that’s niche stuff that doesn’t appeal to that many people or not feasible cost-wise. Idk. But they need to try different things

She got better over time. I do hope she succeeds this time around. I am concerned about the paper overall. Without them, people wouldn’t get good information. Hines occasionally beat us to the news and seemed to get along well with the coaches.

I’ve had some experience this year and they do a good job on the real news. I don’t always agree with them. That’s fine. I did snicker at a letter to the editor about how someone voted against everyone they endorsed. It worked for my candidate this time.

Overall though, we’d be worse off without it.

Welcome back, Kelly. Its great to have an experienced hand that knows the beat back.

That said, she had a disturbing habit of subtweeting statements that some would view as negative about TU and to a lesser extent, the City of Tulsa. It was typically in the discussion threads that various national reporters would start on one topic or another. It wasn't many, but it was enough and spread out over time, so you could tell there was a pattern to ingratiate herself with her colleagues at the expense of the school and the city. She doesn't have to cheerlead for TU. But she can't pretend to be an impartial member of the legacy MSM here to just give the news on Tuesday if she is taking shots at TU on social media on Saturday night and Sunday morning about stuff happening off the field. It would wrong to insist that all of her coverage be positive, but she also shouldn't be saying things that leads people to believe that TU is inferior .... or at least too inferior to merit her being assigned to cover them.

Im cool with her doing the job as long as that nonsense doesn't continue. And we aren't having to endure articles on which TU player her cat likes the most because the school wont give her stories on a platter and she doesn't have the resources to pursue other avenues of reporting.

Fair enough. I agree 100%
