Wiz, Darkhorse #34 and myself have been chatting about a new turf field for Clinton, one that would be maintenance-free for many years; no watering, mowing, or having to chalk the field. What would be the cost? Positives? Negatives? Lets get some input. All input will not be exclusive to Dark Horse Nation.

CHS should budget at least $4.75 per square foot, and that's conservative. Football fields are approximately 80,000 square feet. And I stand corrected, the average turf field lasts 8-10 years, and a warranty usually lasts for 8 years. The cost for the field will be recouped in no time.
I bet BSN/NIKE would buy into it as a major contributor for a small sponsor emblem on the field. The field name on both sides opposite sides and sponsor emblem at the other corresponding side.
Approx cost : just under $400,000. I think sponsorship should be half-$200,000 . Maybe the county would consider what they did instsdium construction in 1984, which was match any $$$ contributed and $ value for in kind labor, and booster club. I think it's very doable. The right people need to get involved and spearhead it.
Only issue I’ve heard about it is how hot the turf gets during August and sept but considering all games are at 7pm or later that shouldn’t be too bad.
it does get hot, but as you say the heat of the day has passed by game time.
I really feel this a good idea and will just add to that mystic Darkhorse Stadium already possesses.......and most people seem to think naming the field after Coaches Robinson and Lewis is a good idea
So something like this were would it start......would this be something that would have to go thru the booster club first or the Athletic department???
I would guess the AD, they can get the specific costs, then pass on to the Booster Club to assist or spearhead the fundraising.

Aint nothing to do with a big head...all the classic games played on that field and great players that have played on that field their is a certain mystic to it......but i wouldn't expect you to understand that

dog79, interesting point, i don't think an artificial surface would need as much crown, I'm sure in the installation issues like draining etc are taken care of in the installation. Campbell's artificial surface is relatively flat.

Not an expert on the issue, but that cost seems very low. Our folks in Thomasville looked into it 8-9 years ago and it was more than twice that. Several fields in the mountains, so maybe some of their fans have insight. I’m sure there are multiple brands that each have their own pros and cons. Just my experience.
Yes, the field will be flat. After the field is ripped up, it would be graded and leveled out. And there is no need to come on here and disrespect our stadium. To many of us former players and fans, Dark Horse Stadium holds a certain mystique, just like that sand box of a stadium in Wallace holds a certain mystique for Bulldog fans.

Yes, it is a high crown, but you have to admit that it drained superbly! Even i would prefer a smaller crown or a flat field, though.

We looked into it several years ago and the cost is somewhere between 750 and 800k. Last from 8 to 12 years. Replacement cost are about 250 300

Turf is great for maintenance and providing a safe consistent playing surface. Would cost roughly 350k to have it installed, and would be good for at least 10 years, probably closer to 15 if you take care of it. A couple of things to look at are who all plays on it, is it in an area where you may have flooding, and can you keep the turf cool in the summer? You'd have to buy these water cannons to spray it during the heat of the day from June til mid Sept down here. We had it installed at Smoky Mountain and the kids love it, so do the coaches!
