Wait. He’s got 5 Power 5 offers and he’s not rated by Rivals?
His dad played for Iowa, he was offered by Iowa last October.

Rivals doesn't show that Columbia offered. He has only visited two schools, Iowa and Michigan State.

He's a class of 23 kid? When do we run out of room? Especially unrated kids.

He’s a high 3-star on TOS. Plus we don’t have a TE commit in the 23 class and stealing a legacy from Iowa sounds fun.

6'6 athletic kids don't just grow on trees. Some of you put way too much focus on stars. Would have turned down JJ Watt because he only had 2 stars.

Ok, so you build your team with no star ranked kids and put them up against the Georgia's of the world. Will that work? Consistently? Shoe me someone who has made it work Consistently.

The kid may be all American, darned if I know but there might be a reason he has two offers. But I suppose you could say all the coaches who passed on him are idiots, which is a lot of coaches, just in Texas alone.

This kid is in high school still and has had the same impact as about 5 or 6 TEs and WRs that are currently on our roster.
We need dudes that produce. If you are here 3 years and we have no idea what you can do for the team…. You need to hit the portal

Someone asked if we have room, hell yes we do. Cut that dead weight. Never been easier with the portal and one time transfer rule.

Love how people like to throw vs Georgia (one of college footballs best recent dynasty’s) into every example, extremely silly logic. We’re trying to get to a winning record and a decent bowl game to start, pump the brakes fella.

Wager coached him and you’re gonna question him?! C’mon man….

It's easy.

Let's make each comparison between the 2-time national champion and a team with multiple consecutive losing seasons.

Logical comparison.

I try to make logical comparisons of the University of Texas's $ 1 Billion Endowment fund to Peru State every chance I get.

Are the coaches really building the team with no star ranked kids? Last I checked, rivals has us at four 4 star players and 18 3 star players.

If the coaches want to take a flyer on someone every now and then, I’m ok with that.

No but TODAY we have a hole at TE in our depth chart. We needed another guy to develop in that room. He appears to me to be a similar guy to Brahmer with maybe more upside.

OK, use Michigan, Ohio State, or Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois, but I guess now we actually beat Iowa so I will give you that. The point was/is, there is a correlation whether people want to ignore it or not.

I don't want to bash on the kid, I really don't know anything about him and aside from his coaches, neither do most on here. I am just going off the data that is out there for everyone to read.

To your point, why, with the portal, why and how could he come in TODAY to fill holes in our TE room? All this given, nothing indicates he has ever played TE and is certainly undersized. A long term project I can see, but immediate help not so much.

Dude you now use Michigan and OSU who get constant top 5 classes in the country and Purdue and Minn in same sentence what am I ignoring? I think you’re just typing to complain at this point about a kid our staff likes or thinks has a lot of upside. We have a top 25 class by experts (which means little) and awesome transfer class (on paper). If your logic makes so much sense why is UCLA or university of Texas of the worlds who produce stellar four and five star classes so weak and under achievers? In three years if Matt Rhule hasn’t produced good quality football players and and a good chunk of wins then you have something to stand on….until that point quit looking for instant gratification in the off-season of year zero. Programs take years to build, how some forget that is beyond me.

This is a guy our new TE coach thinks is a legit P5 prospect. When I said we need a TE today I’m talking about this freshman class. You will note that I referenced Brahmer. While a high caliber TE from the portal would be nice I’m not sure the guys out there are more talented than the guys already on our roster. IMO you only take a portal guy if you’re pretty sure he can be a starter for you.

Why is Iowa called Tight End University?

ESPN listed Iowa No. 2 in its Tight End U rankings earlier this year, trailing only Miami, but many of the Hurricanes' products — all but David Njoku and Greg Olsen — are far removed from the NFL. If you ask Kittle, he'll tell you Iowa is the real Tight End University.

In 2019, two years after Kittle was drafted, Hockenson and Fant became the first tight end duo from the same school to be drafted together in the first round. Hockenson has a chance to join Kittle and Clark among the very best tight ends produced by the school.

And another Iowa tight end may soon join the ranks. Sam LaPorta has more than 1,000 receiving yards since the start of last season despite the Hawkeyes' broken passing game. He's projected to be a Day 2 pick in the 2023 draft.

While LaPorta won't enter the league with the same fanfare as Hockenson or Fant, it's easy to forget Kittle was a little-known fifth-round pick in 2017.
------------------------------------------------
When Iowa offers a Tight End, we should be paying attention; so yeah, I'd be glad to welcome Flores to NU.

You are backing up Dingle. Here is what we currently have on the roster. Sure, you always want better athletes at every position and attempt to recruit over what you currently have, its called getting better. IF we do need another TE in this class and IF he does make us better, then I say go for it but it is a gamble. We currently have 7 Freshmen listed at the TE spot, not all are scholarship obviously. How many do you want in a class and how many can they afford to stockpile at any given position?

Bump for @TruHusker. I see a lot of responses to others, but not to my post. Maybe I’m on ignore, I don’t know. Clearly the coaches are not building the team with no star ranked kids. Why make a big deal out of it when what we do have are 3 and 4 star kids up to this point?

Dingle clearly said the room needs another TE to DEVELOP. And finding a proven TE in the portal is almost impossible. Not many show up compared to other positions.

With Vokolek and Brewington gone, the room is very young and really unproven. Ideally, NU could pick up a good one from the portal or JUCO, but in a room of mostly young guys, those that really develop will eventually play, barring a history of injury like Fidone.

If this new recruit doesn’t beat out the walk ons then maybe you have a beef. I’m not counting on Fidone playing a whole season and you have multiple walk ons listed, a walk on converted to TE from OT and 2 guys who are gone.

Stars are important but not the be all and end all that people think. When you stack talent upon talent like Georgia and Alabama do it only goes so far (see Texas, Osu, Clemson etc.) What makes a difference is superior coaching to make it elite.

Stars are assigned by people based on mostly camps and some film study. Coaches who work hard at finding hidden talent pour over film and dig into verifiable things like height, weight and speed, work ethic, coachability etc. The emphasis is on potential and the ability to max it out good coaching can do that.

Some kids don't show out in high school for a lot of reasons. Maybe they didn't mature physically until late, maybe their coaches are terrible, lots of reasons. Some kids also peak early and are men amongst boys in High School but don't have what it takes when it's all big fast dudes. It's a crap shoot.

Hon many times have we signed some highly ranked kid who was 3 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter than what was listed. I have a feeling this staff won't fall for that. They seem to do the due diligence and that is a refreshing thing.
Hopefully some day we'll get some of the best talent but what I really hope is that our staff can coach and develop with the best of them.

Of course there are always exceptions to everything. Most teams want taller receivers but then someone points out an all world Beckham at 5'11" or Brown at 5'10" as examples that there are always exceptions.

The argument isn't if it is one or the other, talent or coaching, it is both and always has been. Shoot, that was proven over and over at Nebraska under TO's leadership. He had the incredible ability to recruit top talent and find the hidden gems and then coach them all up.

That said, there is ZERO correlation to even above average recruiting and championships. The top teams on the ratings are generally the top teams for recruiting. I have asked but no one can point to a purely developmental program that takes very lowly rated players and wins championships. They can win some games and I guess one could argue, that needs to come first in our case.

I have seen HS coaches come in and take over a losing team with essentially the same kids coming back and win with them. Just a better coach, better system, better communication and team orientation. Happens regularly.

These college coaches know what they are getting in a player. They watch them, have them on campus, check their height and weight so there really aren't surprises there for them. They don't recruit a kid who is advertised as 6'3' and gets to campus at 5'10" and wonder how that happened.

I've also seen the 1983 Nebraska defense be a total sieve, not being able to stop anyone, to being the nation's #1 ranked defense in 1984, with the same kids. It doesn't happen often, but it has before.

The correlation to recruiting is almost moot. It’s been some number of years since I looked at it but I seem to recall that you had to be in the top 5 or maybe even top 4 for like 2-3 years for a strong correlation to national championships.

I love Nebraska football, but us having a top 4 year nationally recruiting is probably going to be an occasional thing and not a yearly thing. We’re almost by definition a program that is going to lean on development and some luck, because the gap between us as a top 15 recruiting team and the top is bigger than the gap between 15 and 25.
