I have created a new 6-class realignment model using just football schools first (smaller 6A and 1A with larger 5A thru 2A) and then adding non-football schools back in. I welcome any feedback you may have. You can find it at http://www.simmonsratings.com under the HS football section.

Dang RD....Simmons takes a lot of time dividing teams into 6 classes, and all you can say is, "I'd like to see a 5 Class Realignment." Thanks Simmons, I enjoyed it just like I do everything on your site. It's always fun to look at.

Looks like you have some room to spread the Raleigh schools around once the new ones are built in Fuquay Varina and Garner. Also nice to see you found a home for McDowell.

The biggest concern with more than four classes is usually travel for non football sports due school night events with either the time the student athlete must get out of class or the time they get home.

Conferences and classifications should be different in football and football only. Travel on Friday nights aren't as bad as during the week. JV games would be a little concern, but you could start games at 6 and be fine if it's a long way to travel.

Back when Crest and Watauga were in the same conference they got a little creative with scheduling. Games were played on a Friday or there simply wasn't a JV type game for certain sports. Could imagine some schools taking that approach if travel became a significant issue.

Well, a five-classification model would be just as fun to look at. Still, whether you go five or six classifications, you still have lots of split conferences. Thus, which model would bring about less of the split conferences? Just more food for thought.

I have seen a five classification model elsewhere, just not with all the non-football schools added.

don't we basically have 8 classifications now?

Four classes with one champion in all sports except for football where there are two per class. Note, that some sport may not be a four class champion but I am not sure.

The NCHSAA went to the schools the last two years trying to reduce the number of football champions and teams that made the playoffs. The schools were the ones that were against it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they reduce the playoffs rounds in 1A and 4A from the coming year. I thought I read that somewhere last spring.

The NCHSAA wanted to go to 32 teams, down from 64, 1A and 4A. Schools did not want to drop the number. There was a compromise worked out. I do not like the bye week. 32 teams would have been over 42% of the schools making the playoffs. They are at about 65% with 48 teams.

I bet the teams were against it. There have been so many participation trophies handed out the last few years nobody wants little Timmy's team to be at home in round 1. It should have never made it this far in the first place but what do I know. I am 54 and seen a lot of changes in my days.
