What do you guys think of the new 40 second play clock rule being instituted this year? I am interested to hear your thoughts on this. I like it personally but I can see some issues getting acclimated to it from the officials, clock operators, ball boys and chain crews.

Depending on how hungry an individual may be at a particular space and time, a four course meal could be consumed in fourty seconds.

One thing I have been told, even if school has 25 second clocks, it’s approximately $3000.00 fix to make clock do 40/25.

Any AD’s or Coaches on here that can confirm it?

Starting the clock when the ball is spotted eliminates the need to wind the clock by the white hat and imo should make things more efficient. But I can't count the number of times I've seen a play clock run out (for more than 2 or 3 seconds) and the time keeping official never call a penality. In close games that is very frustrating and I don't see this rule helping in that matter.

ThomasvIlle had a group of boosters fork over $7500 for new play clocks a few months ago. I sure hope they’re convertible to 40 seconds without extra cost. First play clocks the Bulldogs have ever had.

NFHS announced rule changes in January. This was one of them. I have no idea what play clocks cost, but I sure hope for Thomasville or any other school buying new ones this year AD and manufacturer was aware.

$7500. I was part of a group of about ten volunteers who paid for them, and worked with the AD, the city staff (which owns the stadium) and the manufacturer. The manufacturer was out of state. There was no mention of a rule change, but the purchase order was placed before January. Took several months to get the play clocks and battery packs. We had hoped to have them last year, but the lead time was long.
If these can’t adapt to forty seconds, guess we’re back to fundraising. But if they have to be retrofitted by the manufacturer, we won’t likely have them this season.

Field play clocks are for the fans and players benefit. I think officials keep time on the field.

Officials always kept 25 second on field and will now keep 40/25 on field. As long as play clock on field is kept appropriately officials will use it, but BJ is keeping also.

Don't worry Thomasville I believe you will have no problems with your new clock, And don't think any other school will either As far as paying $3000.00 to update their clocks I think they were ripping some school off for their money.

We found that the ones we purchased can be programmed from 99 seconds down. We did learn the hard way that the brand new batteries, purchased separately, need to be charged often. One of the four won't hold a charge. Live and learn.
