Scholarship? Gotta think Pickering will be picking a new school in the portal this spring.

Matt Waldoch seemed to fix our field goal issues at the end of the season. He was 4-4 for Field Goals with a long of 41 yards and 9-9 for Extra Points last season.

Between Waldoch and Pickering you'd think we'd be set next season. If one of the two can knock some kickoffs out the back of the end zone we'll be in really good shape.

Yeah, why would he transfer? When healthy, the kid can really kick.

I’m thinking the fact that we’re bringing in the top juco kicker Contreraz and now this kid. To me it looks like we’re going to give him his chance but if he doesn’t deliver, then he might be out similar to Lightbourn.

If those new guys are better than a healthy Pickering, then we'll be in very good shape.

I'm glad NU is adding depth, but I've never understood all the angst over Pickering's injury. Just because kicking is a non-contact position, doesn't mean a kicker can't get hurt. Baseball pitchers get injured and can't pitch. Golfers get injured and can't play. Injuries don't always come from contact, and it takes very healthy legs to drive a football 70 yards.

Well it's good to have several kickers to choose from. Competition is good but after someone finally wins the job, whoever loses will likely be departing. And, that's the way it should be.

IMO, it would be nice though IF Nebraska actually had their special teams coordinator in place before making this personnel decision. Not sure what the hold up is here. Just a formality or they haven't picked a person yet?

Yes, a guy would surely think so. Another upside is that we couldn't possibly be worse than last year....nowhere to go but up!

Some of Waldoch's kicks looked kind of goofy and too low most of the time. I think some of those kicks are going to get blocked eventually though his accuracy was nice. Pickering is the best kicker we have and I think it's laughable people want him gone after the debacle we had when he wasn't available.

Agreed not to mention I believe at least a couple other kickers got injured last year as well. We'll be a lot better off now that DeWitt 's gone.

I don't have any inside information on it, but apparently it was a hip injury. Maybe someone else here knows for sure.
I've heard it described as a hip flexor injury at one point. I don't know the accuracy of that but anything involving a kicker's hip on the kicking side especially for a soccer style kicker is devastating. I'm guessing there is concern for his long term availability.

that’s no doubt. Barrett Pickering is a great kicker when healthy and I think everyone (or some) forget how well he done for us as a true freshman just because of his injury this past season and him not being available most of the season. He should be 100% this next season and bombing away. GBR

I wouldn’t call Pickering great. Serviceable inside 40 yards, yes but not great. Alex Henery was great. Kid could consistently make it from 50+ yards.

"This kid" has a long field goal of 39 yards. Only other offer came from Ok St on Saturday. Not real inspiring.

No offense, but that comparison is not good one. I know kickers practice a lot of kicks, but a starting MLB pitcher in baseball puts more wear and tear on their arm in one day than a kicker does on their leg in one season. That's like comparing your local 5k runners to kenyan marathon runners

Of course, but my point is injuries happen in all sports, not just those that involve blocking and tackling. So while kickers get injured less often than other players, if you’re injured, you’re injured. It’s not like Pickering can go out and kick effectively with a hip injury..

Isn't he a preferred walk-on meaning he will go on scholly next year?
I don't think so. It used to be that a preferred walk on got some guarantee I believe on fall practice etc. I don't think there is any guarantee about a scholarship. IMO it's just a term used to make a walk on feel better because he was actually recruited.

DeWitt had nothing to do with our kicking woes.

Who knows. He certainly had something to do with our Special Teams rankings plummeting from somewhat respectable under Riley (believe it or not) to some of the worst in the nation, and for giving up long runbacks for TDs. Despite his cancer diagnosis, which I hope he is doing well now, I couldn't wait to unload his liabilities as a STs coach. He was f'ing horrible!

This new guys' stats suck, long of 38 yards. Made all but one of his extra points but so does everybody. Just because you have 5 or 6 kickers doesn't mean you can consistently kick field goals of 40 + which is what we need, also put it in the endzone on kickoffs. We better hope Pickering is healthy. Hopefully, Snyder can fix the rest

I'm inclined to agree.

If you have 5 or 6 kickers do you really even have 1?

This is a dumb question but one would think walk-ons if they transfer as walk-ons, they shouldn't have to sit out. Should only apply to scholarship players???

fair enough...but hey, he was a true freshman that year and did pretty well considering. He even nailed a clutch last second FG in blizzard like conditions for the win against MSU. I’d say, at the least, he’s a solid kicker.
