Answers to some of your questions from my perspective (I became a NU die hard from basically as soon as I accepted an offer for grad school there in 2009).

Biggest rival: Illinois across all sports, but I'd say Iowa, Wisconsin, or Nebraska in football.

Hated teams: I don't hate any teams, but I particularly dislike losing to Ohio State, Penn State, and Maryland.

Sport school: NU has excellent women's lacrosse teams (Coach Amonte Hiller is a name that is household in the NU community), and women's tennis is consistently good too. In general, NU's women's sports tend to do better than the men.

This year's football expectations by me: Win percentage between 50 and 80.

Unfortunately I think the 2017 men's basketball season was a flash in the pan. I think that the 2020 women's basketball, however, was the beginning of a strong run.

Ride your bike everywhere!
Interesting about "ride your bike everwhere." Back in Ninteen Hundred and doopty doop, I was one of two or three students who rode a bike around campus. Took some real heat, though, as walking was the preferred method of transport. I can still picture walking through Tech every morning to get to class.

Ah ha. ...Mahalo.

BTW, in terms of other good NU teams, NU wrestling has historically competed well in the nation’s toughest wrestling conference.
Did anyone mention anything about the Midlands wrestling tourney that NU hosts over the Xmas holidays? Sometimes winning this is more prestigious than a ncaa tourney champ. It might not take place this year bcause of the pandemic. But if you want to witness some serious studs wrestle at nu- it is a must see especially the final rounds. Just something to check out while on campus. And yes- nu has several elite wrestlers on its team that compete in this tourney. Back when I was in hs 40 yrs ago, I witnessed Dan Gable lose for I think one of the only times in his career. He was at midlands that year and went on to become an olympic gold medalist. At least that is what I was told my friend that started bringing me to the tourney. He is a legend in the sport from what I understand.

Hi All -

Anyway, any advice or thoughts on sports, campus, the business school, how to use this message board are more than welcome.

Go Cats!

I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but hailtopurple.com has a lot of information on NU football. Check it out.
Sorry if already posted.

In answer to the question as to what NU is if it isn’t a basketball or football school, it is a theater/ actor / tv host school. From Charlton Heston, Tony Randall and Ann-Margaret to Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert, NU alums (and almost alums since some reached stardom while still enrolled) pop up on tv and in movies all the time. Even one of the better football players to wear the purple, Fred Williamson, had a decent career in the movies after quitting football.

Did you realize that "Mr. Mike Brady" or Robert Reed was a NU grad as well?? Just thought I'd mention it.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but we also have a LOT of alumni in sports journalism, who are fervent followers of NU sports. To name a few:

Mike Greenberg
Michael Wilbon
Stewart Mandel
Rachel Nichols
JA Adande
Brent Musburger
Christine Brennan
Dave Revsine

I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

I know he's not national, but Daniel Gotera is a NU alum who's a sports reporter for the local CBS affiliate here in Houston. His home office, visible in the background during the coronavirus remote broadcasts, is full of NU gear. Sort of like a local version of Wilbon.

Beat me to it. We have such a large presence in sports journalism that ESPN has the so-called "Purple Mafia", headed, of course, by Michael Wilbon.

To add to the list above, Rich Eisen and Adam Schefter went to Medill for graduate school, but I think they both primarily identify as Michigan alums, since they went to Ann Arbor for undergrad.

Congrats, and welcome to the asylum. I think you will love Chicago (Evanston), though winters are tough. Any chance you are a cyclist?

A few pointers about this board:
1) NEVER refer to us as NW
2) There is a green and gold school about 90 miles east called TSISB
3) There once was a coach named McCall. Utter his name at your own risk.
4) Star ratings discussions are Groundhog Day
5) We are sensitive about attendance figures
6) Every social stratum has a whipping boy. Ours is Illinois football. That’s just how it goes.
7) Don't disrespect NU players on the free board.
8) Not many know this, but the bathrooms at Dyche Stadium were desigNed to make drunk Ohio State fans pee themselves. Thus they are perfect.
9) You will never meet Football Phil, but you will love him.
10) The rant board is where love and sanity go to die.

Poor guy started this thread on rant board. He might already be in therapy.

My senior year, my folks bought me a mustang 5.0 ragtop. The lights on Sheridan were on a timer. I would typically have three brothers coming back from the south end of campus around noon most days and light it up on Sheridan. Top down, radio blasting - I miss college days.

No one has mentioned it yet but I’m kinda the Board god. Most folks around here love the real analysis and thoughts I provide. I’m kind of the breathe of fresh air.

Now, go cats go is a real tool. He used to offer very valuable insight but his head grew, his hair fell out and he started wearing women’s clothing. 🤷‍♂️

Corbi is very similar. Hasn’t started wearing women’s clothing yet - but probably cuz his wife is smaller than him. But he also operates on a limited brain cell basis.

But, we have a few genius posters - Turk, wicker, wrassler, titanium - these guys are amazing.

Coral is like the guy trying to sell you timeshare. You have been warned.

And willycat will tell you to get off his lawn and you are a liar as he is our old, delusional poster and we all wonder how he even knows the internet exists.

You are now officially up to speed. Have fun!
Wow. The loser speaks up. Every community has its share.

?? When I rode my 10 speed down Sheridan, 3 blind seagulls would fly toward the north quad and a chorus of my brothers would sing "Ticket to ride".

We should add here that NU fans get disproportionately excited when the team gets votes in the polls (as has happened following last night’s win), but then we NU fans get nervous once they enter the top 25 (too much pressure) or especially the top 20 (we choke when there’s so much pressure).

Generally, however, NU enters the top 25 or top 20 or top 15 and then loses because they’re about the 20th-best team in the country when they’ve been pretty good.

What is Latin for non sequitur?
DaCat!

GCG, before you start, yes, I know it’s Latin. Get it? It’s a joke.

Well, but for dacat, the mods would have wiped my fun from the board. Luckily, in their quest to allow some specials posters call names, they preserve my hard work. So thanks dacat :). And haha mods :p
