I'm guess Sallach is headed to front office, might move Brewester to TE and make him our new WR coach. That would be consistant with their pasts anyway.

Here are his recruits over the years.... Should speak for itself.

Highly unlikely that he's coming as a Sallach replacement. He was making $400k as a co-OC at Illinois... I see him as an OC/ST coach with Dan taking over QB coaching and playcalling with Koenning being out. This is strictly speculation on my part and I may end up being incorrect, so we will see...

Please be right on this!!!!

I heard in December that Koenning was planning on retiring to spend more time with his family after signing day. I would completely support Billy Gonzalez or Brewster taking over the OC duties as long as Mullen continues to be the major influencer in the offense.

I'm really hyped about Gonzalez's recruiting history. This is the biggest area of concern for me going forward. We have to watch out for the new regime in OM. They seem to have orgasms at the thought of recruiting stars and we need to make sure we stay in step with the rest of the conference to continue to bring in talent.

Keonning isn't leaving. Gonzalez is unemployeed right now, so I don't see what his former sallary has to do with anything.

He's replacing Sallach. Has to be.

I fear this is the case also...Sallach to admin-and status quo remains for our below average offense

Looks like this is right according to Matt Stevens. Gonzalez to coach wr...Brewster to Coach TE...Sallach to admin position

He's "unemployed" because he stepped down this FRIDAY in order "to take another job in college football." He was not fired at Illinois and still had his position. So, salary has a crapload to do with EVERYTHING in this case.

$130k coach being replaced with a $400k PLUS coach? I wouldn't be so sure about that just yet.

This guy has been driven for YEARS now to get a chance to be a bigtime OC. Truth be told, he left Ill because he didn't get the opportunity this year(and wasn't going to with their coaching shakeup). This guy has obviously been driven by that opportunity for quite some time. So why take a lateral move/step back(with a likely paycut) to come to MSU? A whole lot of that plan doesn't make sense.

I'm telling everyone this right now. Koenning is job searching right now -- and has been for a couple of months. He wants out. That generally means the writing is on the wall. Thing is, he's having trouble finding an attractive landing place(and rightly so). I'm still of the opinion that he is going to be out before this season is over. Mullen can only offer him this opportunity for so long before forcing him out...

I thought we were scrapping everything and starting over...

Who said that? I said I heard a rumor that Mullen wants to go back to more of a run first offense...but in no way am I claiming this to be gospel and as I said then- we'll see. That was also flying around the same time that "Les is looking around" was too....but it looks right now like Les will be hanging around another season.

We'll see what goes on this Spring

So you think he's going to be our OC? According to an article, he and some other guy were co-OCs at Illinois and the other guy got fired for lack of offense. So would we want Gonzales to be our OC under those circumstances?

Les job hunting is what I have heard as well. I hope he sticks around though. He just can't call plays for Tyler but did well with Relf. And will do even better with Dak/Cord.

Exactly. They were awful last year. He's not leaving a B1G school that averaged 16 PPG to come be an OC in the SEC.

Sallach is headed to front office. Brewster is moving to TEs. Gonzalez to WR. He will be taking a paycut, and he will not have a Co-OC role here. Can almost guarantee it.

Im not guaranting that Les will be back in 2013, although I'd say it certainly looks that way right now, but Gonzalez is not his replacement.

Koenning has been fired more times than you can count on one hand- didnt stop us from hiring him

Exactly.

A 5 time retread(at least) -- who we "stole" from South Alabama before they'd even completed the jump to D1...

Gonzales has still NEVER been fired from a single position in 18 years now. Make of that what you wish.

I actually think Les does a good job with QBs so if he stays as QB coach I'm OK with that. Wondering if Gonzales might take over the OC role and have Brewster coach WRs and TEs.

Marcello's article said he was expected to become Wisconsin's WR coach... So I don't know where some of you get "he wanted a OC position". WR coach at Wisconsin < WR coach at MSU with your old buddy and Tim 17'n Brewster.

ETA: "Oh, so you want to be an offensive coordinator? Buddy, I have no problem giving you a shot at that. Come on over, be a WR coach, and once this old fart either gets fired or retires I'll give you the keys to the kingdom. That gives you time to get acquainted with what we do here and develop your game."

My point was though ... he was at least partially responsible for the Illini not scoring very much when he was Co-OC. So would we want him as our only OC? Probably not. But apparently Illinios didn't think the was the reason, because they fired the other guy, not Gonzales. I'm not familiar with him, but it sounds like he'll be a great addition to our staff, just not as OC.

Just out of curiosity, how would you distribute the blame for MSUs offense between Keonning and Mullen in terms of percentages? 50/50? 90/10?

Judging by your post, I think your answer to that question isn't in touch with reality.

Give him the title and make him double as ST coach(which he did at Utah) -- let Dan call the plays. Win/Win. Let Brewster have the WR/TEs in pass coaching drills and let Hevesy have the TEs in blocking drills. Make Koenning a QB coach only, if we are determined to let him stick around...

You tell me. Mullen isn't the one making the dumbass playcalls -- he's the one cussing Koenning all game long in the headphones because of said playcalls. So, yes, I blame it 75% on Koenning. Even if it's not true -- there has got to be a scapegoat at this point -- and obviously Mullen isn't putting his own head on the chopping block.

If MULLEN is the one holding us back offensively, then he needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror -- because in ALL FOUR of his years, our offense has been a bigger problem than our defense. Les has been a constant for 4 underperformances. It's alot easier to try starting over with a new OC than it is with a new head coach.

Whoa... I'd definitely say the offense was a lot better than the defense this year. 3,000 yards passing. ~30 TD's, like 10 TD's. A 1,000 yard RB and WR. The offense took a big step forward and the defense took a big leap backwards.

And you would be wrong. I've proven this conclusively statistically MANY times already on here. The offense was still 2-3ppg worse than the defense EVEN this year. I've done extensive math showing that in the past that I will not go back through to prove it again. My numbers were formulated by our offensive output vs average defensive output of opponents and viceversa. In the end, the offense was the biggest problem -- and it has been in all 4 years.

Big step forward?
Scoring O - 60
Rush O - 84
Passing O - 59
Total O - 80

vs
Big step backward?
Scoring D - 34
Rush D - 69
Passing D - 46
Total D - 53

So, our scoring offense and total offense was almost TWICE as bad rankings-wise as our scoring defense and total defense.

I don't give a damn about MSU "passing records" which would have been broken by almost half of FBS this year. Russell was #30 in TD passes and #55 in pass yards/game. Middle of the pack.... Meanwhile, our typically tremendous rush offense was among the worst in the country this year.

Holy ****- are you being serious? This offense wasn't as good as 2010 in a lot of areas- all we did was trade rushing yards for passing yards- against a very weak schedule as I am reminded of every time I mention Mullen winning 8 games.

Damn, engie brought the lumber aGAIN. What really jumps out just in those numbers to me is the Rush O and Rush D. 84 on O and 69 on D is totally inexcusable. It screams "SOFT," which is something we've never been before under Mullen. We gotta be that physical team that runs the ball and stops the run. As the Kang used to say, we won't win very many track meets in this league, but we can win by being a bigger bully.

Your stats are borderline useless. I mean, I can't fathom how you seemingly full-brained individuals can think that the problem was anything other than defense. Has the offense got some work to do? Damn right. But our offense wasn't great last year because we had a good complimentary running back trying to be Vick Ballard and it didn't cut it. We simply didn't have the personnel to be a run first team.

Bottom line, the coaches were doing about all they could with what they had. The games we won were because of the offense, PERIOD. We don't beat Tennessee and others if we don't outscore them. On the other hand, the defense lost games for us. They were some points where the play calling could improve, sure. You look at the stats then combine that with reality. I just don't get it with some of you, you'd think you have an agenda. Or are just plain ignorant of football.

And geez, you haven't 'proven' anything, it's all a farce. Your false sense of confidence is laughable. It's more like empty narcissism, you and Coach34 both.

People keep saying that Les is gone but he always stays. I honestly think that our fans have grown bored with our offense, even though it's worlds better than what we're typically accustomed to.

Once again, Goat proves the biggest football dubmass on the board and forces me to bury him(again).

We won games with our offense? But the defense lost games for us? LOL. Since you are too stupid to see otherwise, I will spell it out for you(AGAIN) using JUST our losses, since those are the ones that your dubmass claims "the defense lost for us"...

Alabama averaged 38.7ppg
We gave them 38
Our defense was 0.7ppg above average
Alabama gave up an average of 10.9ppg
We scored 7
Our offense was 3.9ppg below average
In the Alabama game, the offense was the bigger problem by 4.6 points vs mean.

Texas A&M averaged 44.5ppg
We gave them 38
Our defense was 6.5ppg above average
Texas A&M gave up an average of 21.8ppg
We scored 13
Our offense was 8.8ppg below average
In the Texas A&M game, the offense was the bigger problem by 15.3 points vs mean.

LSU averaged 29.8ppg
We gave them 37
Our defense was 7.2ppg below average
LSU gave up an average of 17.5ppg
We scored 17
Our offense was 0.5ppg below average
In the LSU game, the defense was the bigger problem by 6.7 points vs mean.

Ole Miss averaged 31.5ppg
We gave them 41
Our defense was 9.5ppg below average
Ole Miss gave up an average of 27.6ppg
We scored 24
Our offense was 3.6ppg below average
In the OM game, the defense was the bigger problem by 5.9 points vs mean.

Northwestern averaged 31.7ppg
We gave them 34
Our defense was 2.3ppg below average
Northwestern gave up an average of 22.5ppg
We scored 20
Our offense was 2.5ppg below average
In the Northwestern game, the offense was the bigger problem by 0.2 points vs mean.

Total average = (4.6+15.3+0.2-5.9-6.7)/5

Overall, in our losses, the offense is still the bigger problem by 1.5ppg.

Any more questions smartass or would you like to quit while you are behind?

I PROMISE you that you don't want to look at the victories -- which show a MUCH MORE DRASTIC offensive failure in relation to our defense...

You are welcome. Unlike you, when I claim to be able to destroy an argument -- I'm always happy to oblige when pushed. You should learn not to push and maybe I would not make you look so ignorant on a consistent basis.

You're completely discounting the playing time of the defense and the situations of games. I could care less if we had 3 less ypc, the offense was still better. We've never been able to win a game by offense since 1999 and it happened a couple times this year. The difference is we got behind in games like Ole Miss and NW and played like it, so there you go for your stats. Lets take those games out and see how we did. We went 91 yards against Alabama this year (irrelevant that it ended in an interception so don't try to one up me, we still went 91 yards on them).

It was the first year of a system, a makeshift OL, and we're playing a situational RB 3 downs. Yet the offense improve nearly everywhere except maybe individual performance by the #1 RB. I don't care what your stats say. It's true. I don't understand how you can't see that.
