The journalists is telling you half the story. There were a lot of parents complaing about the lack of college scholarships. I am not going to argue that the coach should have been replaced or not. But Jamil has paid his dues and has had some very good defenses at Elizabeth, Linden and Lakewood (which was a doormat program). You add that he had D1 coaching, he is definitely qualified). He is not going to take shortcuts, he is not going to demand the players perform in the classroom. All his kids and his brothers kids are strong students. He know how delicate some of these kids are. Elijah Hughes is in jail. Many of these kids are gangbangers. Many of these kids will fall through the cracks without good guidance. The talent will be there. They are a huge high school with a good pop warner program. I dont think you judge an inner city coaching job just based on wins and State titles.

Great post!

It's also worth mentioning that Malik, and by extension Jamil, have been involved in Elizabeth Pop Warner for many years. Malik is also part owner of a local gym that works exclusively with young athletes. Jackson is a royal name in Elizabeth. The biggest complainers are friends of the people who were just voted out of power but it is still puzzling that their remaining 3 votes on the Board also voted to oust Quinn. Might have something to do with him interviewing for every opening to come down the pike for the past few years.

Times have changed. I remember those two as being scary dudes-I was just wating for big, bad headlines...Ran into them once at the PCs at LSM...Were definitely great players for Coach Graber. From what I remember pre-college at least, I think Malik was the highest rated recruit Graber landed (Fortay was All American-but transferred in).

So why was Quinn ousted ? There has to be a reason. It can't just be to give a native son a chance .

I have no idea what Quinn's contract was but unless it was otherwise stated, his employment would be deemed to be at-will. Therefore, he could be terminated with or without cause for any reason other than an illegal (discrimination) one. This is not particularly unusual.

Technically teachers/coaches contracts are year to year. 9/10 times, theyre usually renewed if things are going right. But that one time, the board dont really have to renew you if they dont want to for any reason.

Don't good coaches get ousted or forced out all the time? Didn't Toal pretty much get ousted?

Usually not for racial reasons.

True. But good coaches get run out of schools for a plethora of reasons. Maybe race had something to do with it but I think saying it's simply race is probably too simplistic. It's never that simple with anything.
