Well, it is getting to be that time again. The does are getting hot, and the bucks will soon be chasing some split toe tail. I’ll be spending many hours hanging off the side of a tree around the holidays, and I need some good book suggestions. I read pretty much all of Jack London’s short stories last year and his novel “The Sea Wolf”, and I think he has become my favorite writer. What are y’all reading?

If you never have, pick up one of Stephen King's 1000+ pagers and knock yourself out. I've been on a bit of a kick lately and have enjoyed his writing. He doesnt cheat the reader.

I second this. 11/22/63 is really good. I’m reading The Stand now. And don’t forget that King wrote several good books under the nom de plume, Bachman

11/22/63 is the best book that I have read in awhile. Rising Tide about the 27 Ms river flood is pretty good if you are interested in Ms History and politics. It’s amazing how much a local natural disaster changed this entire country.

both were my two favorite books of 2019....i read a lot.....ask away....i read mostly fiction though....The Guardians, in my opinion, is the best book Grisham has ever written, but ive only read about 60% of his books...it was fantastic....also, just finished We Were the Lucky Ones....which was a good one too....

currently reading Spy by Danielle Steele, but im only a little ways into it, so can't give you an accurate synopsis ......those should keep you company during the rut...

see you in the woods ......

Means of Ascent by Robert Caro. If you like politics, it’s the best book on the subject I’ve read. Starring LBJ.

2nd 11/22/63, best book I’ve ever read. Knocked it out in about 4 days, 1000+ pages and by the end I was wishing it was 10,000. Am I the only one that totally had the hots for Sade. The girl that played her in the series was pretty and all but nothing like King me thinking, his characters are so great.

The Son by Phillip Meyer is the best book i have read in a long. Anything by James Lee Burke. The Prey series and the Virgil Flowers series by John Sandford are my favorite series if you like a book series. Also agree about 11/22/1963, fantastic. Also, the Dark Tower series by Steven King was great.

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.
Second. My favorite book ever. Read multiple times.
Where Men Win Glory is another good one. The Pat Tillman story.
Killing Pablo, Black Hawk Down and Lone Survivor are all top notch.

If you like historical fiction and the Civil War:

The Killer Angels
Gods and Generals

Dispatches from Pluto is good if you would like a Mississippi fish outta water story.

I've been reading the original James Bond 007 series off and on the past few months. Wanted to see how the books and movies differed. Pretty good books but get very formulaic. Overall not a bad way to pass a little time.

You can sometimes find a good deal on the Bachman Books here on eBay with those four novellas. Rage is awesome but so is The Long Walk and The Runningman.

The Institute, King's newest one is pretty good. Harkens back a little to IT as it centers around a bunch of kids and their task to defeat an evil.

I second that 11/22/63 is awesome. It's loooooong, but a great story. And not a King horror story that many assume all of his writing is. It's historical fiction and also has a love story thrown in there to boot. It had its own miniseries on Hulu but I've not see it.

And The Outsider by King came out last year. It was quite good and about to be a HBO miniseries.

Really glad to hear that about the guardians as the last few Grisham books have left a lot to be desired.

If you guys havent read the Natchez Burning trilogy, start now. Its tremendous. Then dig further into Greg’s Penn Cage books.

I read a lot, it's how I decompress at night after a day of dealing with idiots, but for my money you just can't beat a Clive Cussler to escape reality for a little while.

Tapcode

Tapcode: The Epic Tale of a Vietnam POW and the Secret Code that Changed Everything.

This is a biographical account of long-time Tupelo resident Captain Smitty Harris' experience as a POW for 8 years in North Vietnam after being shot down. Great read.

I just finished Greg Isles' trilogy: Natchez burning, the bone tree and Mississippi Burning. Enjoyed all 3. Fictional books, but you can tell it's based on some truths of relations in MS.

If you are interested in the '96 Everest campaign I'd suggest checking out "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev. Krakauer is an author and not the outdoorsman he claims to be. Also, Ed Viestures book "No Shortcuts to the Top" is a great climbing book, he's possibly the greatest American alpine climber.
