My son played for a Catholic grammar school with a great hoops program. Bob Roma, Todd Billet and Dan Werner amoung the alums (and one if those great kids from Ranney too) And it was run well. But oh, the crap I saw. We go to his game, 2nd game of a doubleheader. First game, late fourth Q, on a fast break, a kid takes out a kid going for a layup. As dirty a play as I ever saw. Would be the headline of the NY Post if it happened in a knick game. The kid was really hurt, left on a stretcher. As he was being tended to, an older guy left his seat (by the other basket) and moved onto the court. He crossed his arms, and stared towards where the play occurred, almost as if he approved. Very odd, stayed in my memory.
A week or two later my sons team played in the league tourney. As we walk into the gym, that guy and the kid who committed the foul walked in together to watch the league finals, father and son
Oh, btw, my sons team is winning by a bunch at halftime. And the only kid to worry about on the other team had just committed his fourth foul. As the teams return after halftime, the Dad who keeps score for us calls over the refs and coaches. They have a conversation and then the game starts. Our kids kick ***, easy win. The Dad who keeps score comes over to us and tells us that the good player in foul trouble at halftime came out wearing a different jersey and that jersey # had no fouls Since the refs didnt confirm #s pregame, they allowed it to happen.
Yeah, its only a game. And, sadly, lessons are learned.
