Today - Anthony exhibited morals over money when he terminated his ScrapLife relationship

"I have informed ScrapLife that I am terminating our relationship effective immediately."

Anthony demonstrated true leadership with immediate action. He didn't just make a nice statement. He acted, sacrificed income, and demonstrated true American values. There was no question in his mind what was the right thing to do.

Thank you - Anthony

Didn’t hear anything about this, but the company statement says the guy resigned. Is that correct?

The guy who I believe was one of their owners was forced out. The guy seems to have a history of similar statements on his personal account. Anthony and Seth Gross terminated their relationship ScrapLife. Other olympic candidates decided to stay with ScrapLife. James Green came out in strong support of Anthony, Green defeated Anthony to win the World Team Trials last year.

Nolf and David Taylor both posted statements said they disagree with the comments but remain with the company. Nickal hasn’t posted anything yet.

Anthony I am truly proud of you young man.A true leader taking a stand in doing the right thing morally.

God will bless you with bigger contracts - surely earning double than what you lost. No money is worth been associated with that type of nonsense.

What is Scraife?

ScrapLife is the company that Anthony had a contract with, he represented their gear, and earned income from ScrapLife. One of the owners posted a racist message on the ScrapLife Facebook page. It was then removed and posted by owner on his own. Once Anthony confirmed what the owner did, he immediately terminated his relationship with ScrapLife. This took a lot of guts as Anthony may be using his ScrapLife income to help support him as the trains to make the Olympic team. He placed values over money. He didn't hesitate to do the right thing. It appears that the owner is no longer an employee of ScrapLife. Don't know if he retained his ownership.

Reading the main thread on themat.com, I realized that most of the wrestling fans who post there think that Ashnault. Rutherford, James Green and other wrestlers who took similar positions are hypocrites. It's interesting. I hadn't given much thought before to the politics of the "typical" college/amateur wrestling fan, but given the regions of this country where wrestling is most popular, I expect that the predominant reaction among most wrestling fans to Ashnault's stand is pretty negative.

I used to go to the NJSIAA tournament in Atlantic City with my father, and now I am reflecting on the racial dynamic in play among the spectators when black wrestlers faced off against white wrestlers in the high profile matches, especially the finals. I remember a famous final between Ocean City's Pat Lynch and the late Damien Covington. The crowd was really pro-Lynch, and there seemed to be, among the spectators we sat with, a racial framework to the hype around the match. And when Covington won, I remember how his family and his school's contingent celebrated, but the overwhelming majority of the fans, who were white, were silent. It was a little unnerving. I think Covington had upset Lynch in the Region 8 final, so not sure if you could say he was the underdog going into the final, but in terms of high school pedigree, Lynch was an all-time great in South Jersey. Fans really wanted Lynch to win, it seemed, even those not from OC or Millville, where Lynch had his youth wrestling roots.

Lynch was incredibly popular, being a 2 x champ going for his 3rd title in 1991 at Jadwyn Gym. Covington almost unknown, although Covington bear Lynch the week before at Regions. Covington beating Lynch was still an upset (at the time) as Covington had never even placed, let alone winning at States. Crowd might have been in stunned silence Although it was the featured match lol. PS- it was the last time the States would be held in Princeton.

PPS- RU great soccer player, Rob Johnson , was champ at 171 that year.

Lynch vs Covington , 1991 NJ Championships (w a Flo Subscription)

That was at Jadwin? I remember taking my dad to both AC and Princeton for states, just didn't remember where this match occurred. My dad saw the Region 8 finals, and hyped the match up for me. I remember that Covington seemed larger than Lynch, who was wrestling up one weight class from previous year, but seemed like he easily could have wrestled at a lower weight class.

Yes, at Jadwin and you are correct...Covington was much bigger than Lynch. Lynch moved up a weight so his good friend and teammate could get in the lineup.

Covington placed 4th the year before(last name as a Junior was Blaylock, changed it senior year), so he was talented and just too big and strong.

A few tidbits from this morning's podcast:

This Monday, the Wrestling recruiting window opens for the 2022 class (kids entering Junior year HS this Sept), Coach G said they will be making something like 30 phone calls to prospects that day, same for Tuesday and Wednesday, with the staff taking turns talking to the prospects, so the prospect gets to talk with everyone on the staff by the end of the week. He also said the 2022 class of prospects will be more out of state kids than usual.

Ashnault said USA wrestling is trying to set up some matches soon, and he hopes to be competing. With a possibility to face Jordan Oliver.

95 per cent of the Podcast was a conversation with Olympic Champ Kenny Monday about his Olympic experiences, wrestling in College, a bit about Dave Schultz and John Smith , his sons who wrestling at Princeton and UNC and other wrestling topics.

Replay should be up tonight or tomorrow.

It was terrific as usual. Monday is a real classy guy. What he has accomplished is amazing and as Scott says, “you should be on wrestling’s Mount Rudote”.
