Is the absolute best we can hope for against a good team after we make the 3 way Tez, Cliff, Young switch.
The turnovers and electrifying moments even out.
Young out there with Myles to dish too
makes him a far more dangerous player

Myles is only playing better because Caleb and Mulcahy are actually looking for him....and Mulcahy has stopped hesitating and is doing exactly what I was critical of him doing in the Wisconsin game of not taking what the defense gives him.....Mulcahy and Caleb are best when attacking and driving, then making a drop off pass to Myles to score.

I would leave the lineup as it stands now, we are getting bench points from both Mathis and Young and getting more assists and playmaking, which increases Myles productivity. If we can corral Young a bit, this becomes a very dangerous roster that can go up another level.

Agreed lineup combinations are bizarre. Young Paul Mathis McConnell Cliff is a lineup that literally can’t score unless Young and Mathis are putting their head down and driving to the basket.

Even with most of Youngs minutes coming without Myles almost at all, barely with Harper, and a few more with Geo he still managed a lower turnover percentage than Paul.

Paul played really well on the glass but hit one shot in 32 minutes. Just want him to shoot a little more based on the minutes he play because the offense struggles to score when he doesn’t contribute there. He’s getting better and better.

The reason we won last night imo is not because of McConnell but because McConnell contributing offense for the first time this year. Was needed because we played a lot of geo Paul and McConnell and the defense suffered. But they were able to outpace it with a rare good shooting night above our averages across the board.

Seems to me Young has been scoring more and greatly more efficient on the three ball than on his drives. Last night he was awful. At times he is great and has abilities unmatched by anyone else on the roster. If he stays under control he is a plus.

Maybe coaches should consider taking out Baker or Harper PLUS Mulcahy or Caleb with SUB #1.

Alternatively...consider resting Myles very early and giving Young Myles to work with.

just thoughts.

lineup after SUB#1 of
Young Baker Mathis Harper Cliff just isn’t working

Young has the most raw talent of anyone on the team. Pike needs to figure out how to get him involved and playing efficiently if we have any chance of making a run in the tournament.

I’d like to see Cliff and Myles out there at the same time again.

My view of the reason this is not currently working is that Harper is not currently hitting ANY open looks from 3. He is 3-28 in the past 6 games. If he was able to elevate this to even a 30% clip, this rotation would likely not be an issue. Only a guess, but I imagine this is a mental/confidence thing and he is hitting them in practice and Pike is looking for a break-out of this slump.

When Harper has a wide open 3 he should take a fade away shot.

of course I am joking. His release angle and arc are better with his fadeaway shot and he has confidence in it.

I think that Pike has a problem with the bench. He's only using three guys and I don't think he trusts them based on how inconsistent they've been lately. He's been going with the starters at important times in the game and not necessarily with the best matchups because of the decision making by Jacob and Montez. The lack of development of the other three freshmen (Mag, Oskar, Dean) adds to Pike's problem of being limited in his substitutions. Caleb said he was gassed at the end of yesterday's game and when you're tired bad things can happen (not yesterday obviously). Just hope that no one gets injured and that JY and MM contribute more.

I look at a lot of the box scores around college basketball and most teams play 7 to 8 players. I don't always agree that it makes sense to have just 7, 8 seems to make sense if you have players that can play multiple positions.

Mulcahy is really not a Point Guard, he plays 3 different positions....same with Caleb, his frosh season, he was Geos backup, when Jacob Young was sitting out as a transfer....Harper can switch on defense, so can Mathis at 6'4....ideally, Jaden Jones helps by becoming part of the core group that covers multiple positions on the floor.

I don't know if a lot of teams can get away with just 8, but most teams have a lot of the same athlete profile of 6'4 to 6'7.....it's much easier to maneuver on offense and defense if you're not locked into just 1 position.

Young can be "corralled" but Pikiell is hesitant to do it. Take him out of games where he is playing selfishly. In yesterday's game at one time he dribbled laterally and was stripped. Why was he playing after that? Make him
pay in terms of playing time and he will straighten out his thinking.

maybe stop continuously trying to split two defenders with his ridiculously high dribble would be a good place to start.

I see Young and Mathis as the lefty/righty version of the same player. Great defenders, both fast and often out of control, both take it to the hole and both can knock down the occasional trey. Young gets the nod for better foul shooting, better handle, and potentially a better playmaker when he is unselfish. As a result I see Young getting more minutes than Mathis, and I’d prefer not having them on the court at the same time.
