All of the unreasonable hype for Husker football this year reminds me of when our bball team was picked to finish in the final 4 and dramatically underperformed. Example: Tim Brando picked Nebraska to finish number 8 not in the Big Ten but in the country!

But at least we had won a game in fhe Dance. Don't get this optimism for Nebby....

I also don’t get it, but if they win the media will love it and churn out puff pieces about their coach’s impact.

The flip side: if they have another losing season, the Frost will quickly come off the Huskers. It’d be interesting to see how quickly they’d turn on the coach they idolized for years.

The Huskers finished last season strong and have arguably the most favorable schedule in the B1G West for this upcoming campaign. Plus their QB is a dynamic play maker. I agree that the hype is over the top, but I get where it's coming from.

I actually agree with some of the pundits about Neb being really good this year. But to be honest, as long as we beat them and we go again to the BIG champ game again...I just don't really care how successful they are this Fall. I say "bring it on...." They very well may be ranked #8 in the country when all is said and done this coming season. I just hope we finish higher.

I agree with you. What is all this hype surrounding Nebraska? Everybody thinks Frost will get the team back into the national spotlight, but they also thought that last year. And what happened? BOOM. 4-8 season. It took them until Week 8 to win a game. And along the way they lost to Troy. TROY!!!! So I think this year, they'll be a little better, but still not finish better than 7-6.

While I agree that the Husker hype is a little over the top, I think there is some basis in it. Their offense improved a lot with a freshman quarterback, and their execution on offense was pretty impressive. I would not be surprised if they have the best offense in the division, though Purdue and Wisconsin will be good on that side of the ball.
They had holes on defense, and I don’t think it was clear whether the defense, based on coaching, would thrive or founder even if those holes get plugged. As a result, I really think there is a wide variance in expected outcome on the defensive side of the ball, from almost as bad as last year to pretty good. If it reaches the pretty good stage, they may well win the division and could end up ranked in the top 10. If I were a pundit, they would be a tempting pick since it would show how I saw the talent and trend before they were good.

Personally, I think they finish fourth behind the Cats, Wisconsin and Iowa, but I also think their chance of winning the division is better than Iowa’s and pretty close that of either the Cats or Badgers. I also think they are much more likely than the Cats or Badgers to finish 6th. I have noted before that every team but Illinois has a shot this year, and there really is not a favorite among them.

One of the things that really bothers me about Nebraska is that whether the match up is in Evanston or in Lincoln, it’s a home game for Nebraska. Please ‘Cats, shut the Husker crowd up again this year.

For the record, losing to Akron is significantly worse than losing to Troy. Troy has won at least 10 games each of the last three seasons and are the king of the Sun Belt (which is basically a more athletic version of the MAC). Should Nebraska be losing to them? No...but Troy is a legit program that has had success recently.

I love my Cats, but just sayin...

Agreed. Everyone is loving in Nebby because of Frost (and with good reason IMO). Remember when Saban took over Bama and went 5-6 including a loss to UL Monroe his first season? How did the rest of his tenure turn out?

Now I’m not saying Frost will turn Nebby into Bama or that he will win the division this year. What I am willing to say is that Frost will turn Nevraska into a national player again soon. That includes winning the division and winning the conference. The guy’s pedigree is excellent and he has done it before.

Nebraska had NU dead and beat last year and gave away the game. Nice comeback by NU and glad for the result but I can see why Nebraska would be picked higher in the Big Ten than the 'Cats.

There’s a lot of parity in the Big Ten West now. Fleck at Minnesota still doesn’t scare me, but Frost at Nebraska and Brohm and Purdue have both programs pointed upward.

I think it would be a mistake for us NU fans to start looking down on the rest of the division after the Cats won the division once. Yes, We Are Good. But it’s going to be a tough battle in the division every week except the last one in the regular season.

Troy has played 3 P5 teams in 3 years.

Beat Nebraska.
Beat LSU.
Lost to national champion Clemson 30-24 and would’ve won if not for a 14-point swing bad call.

That is every NU game against a school that’s fairly good.

Nebraska went 4-8 the past 2 seasons and likely should have beaten Northwestern in both years. Top 10 finish is probably a little too bullish but an 8-9 win season is very likely, if some things go their way 10 wins is possible as well. Nebraska will have a very good offense this year.

We likely should have beaten Michigan too for an undefeated BIG regular season, but close don't count. I will admit that improvement is certainly likely given the favorable schedule (you get the other 3 big west contenders all at home, as well as manageable crossover and noncon schedules), but that team was flat-out terrible last year, and I think it will take more than a year to fully right the ship, especially after losing your #1 receiver and with Maurice Washington being in court as much as he is on the practice field. The key is likely how improved an offensive line that couldn't block anyone last year will be... if they can step it up big time, that will cover up a lot of inefficiencies...

^^ But UNL didn't; plus it not like the Huskers haven't lucked out to pull out a win.

Looked on the Nebraska board, which I do occasionally, and found a thread bemoaning last year's loss to Northwestern. There was the usual stuff about Northwestern winning because every other team was "down" last year. I'm saving that excuse for this season. As far as I'm concerned, if Northwestern loses out this year, it's not that we have a bad team. It's simply because we're having a down year.

Yep, they seem to think NU has hit its ceiling last year and they will dominate due to their recruiting uptick. Very little respect for NU.

You want real yuks and giggles read how they defend the Washington kid about the felony arrest for sending the sex video of a 15 year old out or the most recent arrests by the LPD of football players. You know the Police at other powers just let that go type of stuff. It’s only weed etc. You would think Frost went 12-0 last year based on the optimistic view nearly all of their fans have of his ability to turn them around.

Nebraska is an odd fanbase, they have some really good fans and a larger than normal percentage of meatheads. In person, most are decent and friendly, but man they have some internet buffoons giving them a bad name. The Exchanges between Iowa and Nebby fans on the Iowa board are hilarious.

Remember, they beat LSU in 2017. They were within a touchdown of Clemson in 2016. When people pooh-pooh the Sun Belt, I've heard them say, "Well, besides Troy." (Although I'd say Appalachian State also pulls their weight.)

Yes, I enjoy the Nebraska fans in general, but I don't think they've done enough in the B1G to warrant the lofty view they seem to have of their program. They're still living in the glory days, which are starting to recede into the past. They might very well be good this year — certainly their offense should be a threat — but they need to do more on the field before they start talking Buckeye-style smack in our league.
