I'm just confused why there is so much Verge hate when 5* McGowens puts up just as many horrible shots and seems very lackadaisical on defense most of the time. I mean at this point McGowens should be given the Delano Banton treatment from last season: do not shoot the ball outside of 10 feet from the rim unless absolutely necessary. For the love of god stop shooting long 3's as well. He is shooting 24% from 3 on the season. 39% FG. Drive to the rim and drive to the rim only. That is what it seems he is doing a better job of as the seasons progresses. It's a strange thing because he is shooting around 83% from the free throw line.

My guess for the "hate" is because Verge is too similar to Adrian Martinez. I heard the best explanation for both during a FB game last year. The announcer said, "Spectacular lives right next to disaster." Both are capable of making great plays and getting the team in position to win, but then the negative plays spring up during crunch time.

That's a great quote. Will remember that for sure.

I don't think it's him playing too loose. He is just reverting to what he knows when nothing is there and guys aren't making decisive cuts. The broadcast team alluded to this tonight that our guys just do not make hard enough cuts in our sets.
Put me in the Verge hate club. The reason our offense is so stagnant and nobody moves is because Verge does way too much dribbling instead of moving the ball. The offense just dies with the ball in his hands. People stand around because he's bobbing and weaving dribbling like a madman just trying to get in the paint. There is no offense when he's in the game, it's just the Verge show.

Except our coaching continues to allow it so imo it's them not Verge. Also, we had the same issue prior to Verge. I also don't understand why when we have a guy or two that are feeling it we can't draw a play up to keep them going. We hit several 3's then those guys didn't get another clean or designed look for a while once the Verge show started but where is Fred on changing that?

The ball stops when it goes to Bryce. Verge is usually at least doing something with it, usually PnR with walker.

Could be the opposite of that, dictated by Hoiberg's offensive philosophy? I will have to pay more attention during the next few games. (Yes, I am a glutton for punishment and will watch no matter how good/bad they play...).

It seems most of the sets are dictated by the PG penetrating and then either hitting someone cutting to the basket or a kick out for a 3-pointer. Walker is the only one consistently able to make a cut to the basket for Verge to dish off. Don't seem to see the perimeter players getting to spots for wide open 3-pointers like our opponents do. That is either from not moving to help out the PG, opponent defense, or combination of both. We never seem to run very many motion plays, where all the players are moving at the same time. TBH, the offensive flow is no better with Webster as PG and we seem to rely much more on perimeter play (unless McGowens takes it to the hole). Webster rarely penetrates beyond the free throw line and that doesn't open things up much either.

It goes without saying, but the offensive philosophy works much better when the team can hit 40-45% of it 3-pointers as opposed to 25%. Our opponents know they can pack it in the lane to shut down the penetration because our outside shooting has been dismal again this year.
