Nebraska in Trouble?

Has anyone been following the Nebraska news about Maurice Washington?

Apparently, California authorities reached out to Nebby last fall to get in touch with Washington. They are investigating possible child porn and revenge porn charges against him stemming from him sending a video of 2 guys and a 15-year old girl that he somehow obtained TO THE GIRL IN THE VIDEO. He did this because she had previously broken up with him. She has said that she was not a consenting participating in the making of the video...

On top of that, when the California authorities reached out, they were contacted by Jon Bruning who said that he was Washington's attorney. Bruning is the former AG of Nebraska, a Nebraska alum and was pretty close in the Governor's race primary...a power player. Bruning says he never told the University about the possible allegations, but documents reveal that UNL most likely knew what the investigation was about and allowed Washington to play anyway.

Washington was expelled from his high school in Texas prior to matriculating at Nebraska. He finished his high school requirements in California. An arrest warrant has been filed.

Separate and apart, two Huskers were cited for ordering pizza with stolen credit card information.

None of us are claiming that he made or participated in the video, ya putz. He did allegedly text the video to the girl, who was underage at the time of filming and at the time he texted her the video, which would mean he possessed and distributed child porn. He allegedly sent the video to her after she denied his sexual advances. It's another good look for the historically clean and pristine Nebraska football program.

Don't worry, though! If history is anything to go by, Scott Frost will hold a press conference and announce that Washington will be re-instated because, "he's under a lot of pressure," and kicking him off the team would, "damage any chance of [Washington] being all he could possibly be."

(To those who don't know, Tom Osborne said those things to justify re-instating Lawrence Phillips, the alcoholic girlfriend-beater.)

I honestly don't get it. I've never had a bad experience in Lincoln. In fact, it's one of my favorite road destinations because I've always been treated so well. I don't understand why decent UNL fans continue to defend this sort of behavior from members of their football program. This sort of thing is only going to occur more frequently if Frost continues to offer anyone with a pulse.

I read through the old news articles about this: wow, Frost is a coward. The guy woos the ex-girlfriend of a crazy abusive teammate, and then hides in a closet while she takes a beating for it. Frost is a real piece of work: a 20 year-old man shouldn’t be afraid to defend any woman if they can, even if the guy is as much a scumbag as Phillips was.

Whatever little respect I had for him is gone, between that story and his defense of a player that distributed revenge porn on a minor. I now hope UNL struggles mightily, then cans him unceremoniously a la Solich in a few years.

Yup. Frosty the Closetman handed out 422 offers last year. Does anyone honestly think he and his staff can possibly assess the character of all 422 players offered? Look at Tennessee, who lead the nation with 2,627 offers over the last eight years. They have multiple decommits, drop-outs, and arrests each year because they don't do their due diligence, offer any athletically gifted player with a pulse, and accept a few blockheads as a result. The same trend has occurred at Illinois. It's a huge issue for college football. It's hard to build a good culture when you'll accept just about anyone.

Lawrence Phillips - athletic talent to burn but personally a disaster.

After all that happened to him, Bill Walsh got him on the Niners. LP hadn't seen love like that since Nebraska. Great effort was made to help him grow into a better person. Looked pretty average on the field as I remember, and was quietly gone after a season or 2. Shooting star...
