Virginia Tech transfer CB Dante Lovett hearing from slew of Power 4 schools
Virginia Tech cornerback Dante Lovett officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon after the Hokies fired Brent Pry.
Language is foggy on that since they come from a program that fired a coach. I don’t think anyone that even showed up for a Fall practice with one school, should be able to play for a different team until the next seasonCan we be in contact with a DT from UCLA or VA Tech? Are they immediately eligible?

They cannot be immediately eligible. Once the season starts, you can not be on 2 rosters during the same season. Or else we could have played Williams Nwaneri in the bowl game. Can we be in contact with a DT from UCLA or VA Tech? Are they immediately eligible?
Because I don’t think you should be able to practice with a team, get their playbook, calls, etc…. Then quit and go somewhere else that might pay them more just to have that information. It’s already changed enough, very quickly. Just my opinion.why not?

happens exactly like this in every professional sport, which college football undeniably isBecause I don’t think you should be able to practice with a team, get their playbook, calls, etc…. I figured this would be the retort, which I totally understand. Just don’t care for the idea in college…. At all. If they allow this, there should be a “trade deadline” before teams play a conference game.happens exactly like this in every professional sport, which college football undeniably is
In pro sports they have an actual contract. They typically can't choose to go to another team in the middle of a contract, regardless of the coach being fired. At least not without being traded, released, or a mutual agreement/buyout.happens exactly like this in every professional sport, which college football undeniably is
this is already within a unique provision (coach fired portal window)I figured this would be the retort, which I totally understand. Just don’t care for the idea in college…. At all. If they allow this, there should be a “trade deadline” before teams play a conference game.
It’s completey different .when a nfl or an nba coach gets fired a player cannot say I quit and go wherever he wants. All pro athletes have contracts and about the only time they change teams is a trade.once in a while a Baseball player is given his outright release and his is not in high demand because usually your career is done in most cases.happens exactly like this in every professional sport, which college football undeniably is
It does. BUT it only happens when the player gets cut. If the Bengals fire Zac Taylor tomorrow, Joe Burrow can’t go sign with the Raiders on Monday.happens exactly like this in every professional sport, which college football undeniably is
Ya it’s just different times. Coaches get fired every year and have been for years but in college until recently a coach ( Frost) always made it through the year Even if everyone knew they were getting axed ( Callahan and Riley) as Nebraska example. It does. BUT it only happens when the player gets cut. If the Bengals fire Zac Taylor tomorrow, Joe Burrow can’t go sign with the Raiders on Monday.
i do agree though, if a player is in the portal they should be able to immediately play for the team they go to. AKA if a player is a free agent, they should be able to immediately play for the team they sign with.
With that, I don’t think players should be allowed to enter the portal because a coach was fired. They can enter after the season.
I agree nobody should be able to enter the portal and jump in season. Now if and when the roster limits are set in stone that will end this possibility from happening. It does. BUT it only happens when the player gets cut. If the Bengals fire Zac Taylor tomorrow, Joe Burrow can’t go sign with the Raiders on Monday.

this is irrelevant because NFL or NBA players aren't limited to x years of eligibility like collegiate athletes are. thus, there should be much more urgency in college. It’s completey different .when a nfl or an nba coach gets fired a player cannot say I quit and go wherever he wants. Can they not still play the remainder of the season at their current school?this is irrelevant because NFL or NBA players aren't limited to x years of eligibility like collegiate athletes are. thus, there should be much more urgency in college.
a player being within his rights to enter the portal when his coach is fired shouldn't then be penalized/forced to forfeit 20% of their eligibility for no good reason

They have only played 3 games everyone who wants to transfer can opt out and take a redshirt year. Won’t lose any eligibility. And for those who already redshirted they can get a waiver they hand them out like candy.this is irrelevant because NFL or NBA players aren't limited to x years of eligibility like collegiate athletes are. thus, there should be much more urgency in college.

They don’t lose eligibility which was your argument.losing a redshirt year is losing a year
a materially punitive punishment for no good reason
yes, they do.They don’t lose eligibility which was your argument.
You have players in their 6 th year all over the place because of the new “rules “ in place. Players have no issues on eligibility anymore. If you are a stud and going to the nfl it won’t matter you are not in College for the duration anyway. That being said if the rules allow it go for it . I just don’t think we need college kids changing teams in season and have my solutions on why they wouldn’t have to .yes, they do.
losing a redshirt year is effectively losing a year a player can play college football due to circumstances completely out of their control that the NCAA have already deemed impactful enough to open up a brand new transfer exception.
makes no sense. players who transfer after their coach is fired should be immediately eligible to play at their next school.
I am very open to hearing coherent arguments to the contrary.
NCAA rules usually require players to wait until the next season to compete unless they:
- Are graduate transfers (with remaining eligibility).
- Get a waiver (which is rare and requires extenuating circumstances).
Nico I will enter the portal unless he's an idiot. It would be insane if he could play this year on another squad and not sit out. By the time we play UCLA they will be a hollowed out shell. It does. BUT it only happens when the player gets cut. If the Bengals fire Zac Taylor tomorrow, Joe Burrow can’t go sign with the Raiders on Monday.

They chose to go to Virginia Tech or UCLA where they were having not so great seasons and for coaches that had little or no head coaching experience. Going to that school was completely within their control, they could have left before the season, again within their control.yes, they do.

Nico already used his redshirt season, his first at Tennessee. Regardless as to when he leaves, now or in January, this season will be one of his 4 seasons of eligibility.Nico I will enter the portal unless he's an idiot. I think playing so poorly is a reflection of the players as well as the coaches. To be that bad at U.C.L.A the players have to take some responsibility. Finish the year out at your current school and be better. Maybe try harder and don't get your coach fired three games into the season.losing a redshirt year is losing a year
a materially punitive punishment for no good reason
They'd have to redshirt at current school i believe. Might be wrongCan we be in contact with a DT from UCLA or VA Tech? Are they immediately eligible?
Ya who knows with the NCAA losing all control. But I would believe it would be not right for a player to leave UCLA ( enter portal fired coach) and play for a different college in the same season. They'd have to redshirt at current school i believe. Might be wrong

He could just bow out now and get ready for the combine and draft.Nico already used his redshirt season, his first at Tennessee. Regardless as to when he leaves, now or in January, this season will be one of his 4 seasons of eligibility.
This kids are still college students.you can’t just enroll mid semester at the University because you want to start your education because it’s a good time. You have to wait for semester. Why should an athlete be able to do it ?Makes no sense
have yet to hear a good reason as to why a player can’t be immediately eligible when transferring after their coach is fired
Because it's too late to register for classes at the school they would be transferring to.Makes no sense

For the other 98.4% of D1 athletes that won’t go to the NFL - yes, schoolSchool?
Adorable
Timing of semesters, much like the rest of academia, is completely germaneFor the other 98.4% of D1 athletes that won’t go to the NFL - yes, school![]()
I agree, it is germane to the subject of whether an athlete can play football for a school.Timing of semesters, much like the rest of academia, is completely germane
