That is not an accident. Korea did a much better job of managing the crisis than Italy did, or that we are doing.
It’s easier for Korea...one closed border to the north, water on the other three sides, homogeneous population...sane people.

I'm not sure about that. I think viewers may be turned off by the sterile atmosphere.
I may watch a clip on YouTube and then just turn my attention elsewhere...first time in well over 30 years!

It'll be sterile and emotionless. There's no crowd to play to. Crowds help momentum, what's a dunk without the Ohhh's and Ahhh's? Just a dunk. It'll be like playing in a cavern, the screeching of the sneakers, the bouncing of the ball, the yelling of plays will be echoing through out.
Emotionless for you maybe. You think that the players will let this affect them?

so lets start the list of impact

Hospitality: Hotels, cruise, airlines, restaurants down
Sports: venue staff down
Food service down
Shipping Cargo down,
oil tankers (up as floating storage for excess oil)
Oil and gas down
Private jets up
Retail down

others?

It's all connected. That's why the Stock Market is dropping. Eventually we'll have a month long pause on life basically. Everything will come back at some point. Summer? Fall?

There are no good options is the problem. Don't do anything and it spreads everywhere worldwide. Go into lock down containment mode and the economy is destroyed. Have to try to find the middle ground but it's just too tough at this point. We needed to contain it with testing when we had the chance.

Firing the entire pandemic team chain of command two years ago and never replacing them left the US wildly unprepared but that's another topic. We are where we are now

It's likely too late for lock down. Everyone's been catching it unknowingly for a month.

It will sound like an 8 a.m. AAU game in July.

A buzzer beater with almost no noise in the arena...maybe one network will have a mix-master cranking in crowd sound effects!

I wonder if that's such a bad idea. LOL. Yeah I guess it is.

Just said an announcement coming up on BTN regarding tournament tomorrow after commercial. Maybe banning fans?

I understand the decision, but it’s gonna totally suck watching the games on tv without any crowd noise or excitement.

All we’ll hear is the squeak of sneakers and coaches and players yelling to each other, besides the announcers of course.

Oh well, I’ll still be rooting like crazy from home, for RU to beat Michigan and advance in the tourney.

So you're saying the RAC atmosphere had nothing to do with our 18 - 1 home record?

The total lack of an away fan base could actually be a significant plus for our chances.....but I'd rather be there and take our chances.
Does the committee take this into account? Possible higher seed with the road record being less of a factor?

What 20K more will watch because they can't get in vs. millions watching a game now in an empty arena. Seems like a net loss of viewers to me.
If people are self quarantined what else are they going to do? I would expect huge ratings

Lol let's get some perspective. Some of you people are lashing out because they are cancelling a basketball tournament that we will most likely be in next year. Meanwhile, they have stopped treating the elderly in Italy because it's no longer worth trying to save them.

Cool story -- welcome to the Rutgers Hoops forum, where we talk about Rutgers basketball and the basketball tournament that you speak of. Take your high horse and shove it up your ***.

Was that really necessary? I think the poster you quote suggested that there are priorities greater than our entertainment.

I understand the frustration. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. But it's important to realize, especially after today's statement by the WHO, that this is far more serious than most here realized and that, unfortunately, it is really just beginning.

I would be surprised at this point, given the rapidity of change, if the tournament actually happens. The graph of growth is stunning and our lack of a serious response means it will not be culling itself like China or South Korea were able to do.

That is a heartbreaking conclusion for me. I've waited for this since I was a child. I don't remember the 1991 NCAA tournament, as I was 5 years old, and this means the world to me. So sad to believe this, I don't want to believe this, but I believe this.

I deeply hope I'm wrong.

As I just said in an older thread on this, this obviously sucks (I was going to go to any/all RU games), but it was pretty clear we were heading this way over a week ago. I'd also add that things are about to get much worse for much of the US, including the densely populated DC-Boston corridor (and likely other cities), which means it's possible they'll actually postpone/cancel the actual tournament when there are 5000+ infections next Tuesday (likely). That's what's going on in Italy and we're not that far behind them.

Well, they just suspended the NBA season, so the NHL and NCAA tourney can't be far behind, as I said in the post above.

Wrong. SK did not close the border with China, since they didn't want to piss off their biggest trading partner and frisky neighbor - in fact, it's why SK was one of the early outbreak sites after China. They have just done far better addressing the outbreaks, as I've detailed painstakingly in the other thread. The fact that we haven't adopted their approach of aggressive testing and aggressive social distancing is negligent and borderline criminal.

I understand the point of cancelling all this **** unless they think these people are actually going to isolate at home. Just play for tv without fans.

the nba a player has tested positive so that is different

South Korea does not have a border with China sunshine...they have a border with North Korea...check a map once in a while
