Mac McClung. He’s from Gates City, Va, a little mountain town just a stones throw from the Kentucky border. He had a legendary high school career there, and I recall there being quite a few threads here several years ago about whether Cal should’ve recruited him.

I’d sorta forgotten about him until he burst back into the spotlight tonight.

His first dunk was honestly one of the most phenomenal dunks I’ve ever seen, and I’m not caught up in the moment. It was wildly creative and athletically off the charts
I agree but the last one was something that I don't think anyone will come close to for a very long time.

I'm gonna have to see this last one.. because jumping over two people while they scrunch down into one person of height does nothing for me..

No wonder all the stars are doing the 3pt contest.

He was the MVP of the G League last year. And he was the very last guy cut from the world champion Warriors’ training camp this year.

So he’s spent the last couple years sitting on the very tip of that fine line that determines who does and doesn’t make it in the NBA. Maybe tonight’s publicity will finally push him over to the other side.

The other guy putting both elbows into the rim with his chin well over it was impressive, just because of how insanely high he got and it seemed so effortless, like a hop.

Analysis
The unique story of McClung's dunk contest win will resonate for years to come, not least because he pledged to return and defend his crown in 2024 if invited. Not on an NBA roster until the Sixers signed him to a two-way contract on Tuesday, McClung had already been scheduled to compete as a representative of the G League. Now you know why the NBA wanted him involved despite not being in the league.

Three of McClung's four dunks were scored a perfect 50, with only one voter awarding him a nine all night: Lisa Leslie, for his second dunk in the first round. As compared to other competitors who have tried audacious dunks only to leave the crowd sitting through repeated attempts, McClung managed to find inventive ways to showcase his ability to get up at 6-foot-2 while making every dunk on the first try.

To start, McClung dunked over two people, with a younger one representing his alma mater (Gate City High School in Virginia) carried on the back of an adult. After jumping over them, McClung also had time in midair to tap the ball off the backboard before a reverse finish. Already safely in the finals minus a series of misses, McClung didn't dial it back on his second dunk of the first round, a two-hand windmill 360.

In the finals, McClung again cleared an adult holding the ball and double-pumped for a hesi, reverse two-hand finish that showed a high degree of difficulty on replay. Capping off the night, McClung donned his own Gate City jersey and went at least 540 degrees along the baseline for a windmill finish.

Appropriately, McClung celebrated with his version of Vince Carter's famous "It's over" gesture from the iconic 2000 dunk contest. There was little doubt judges would award him another 50 and the dunk contest win.

I didn't watch but when I heard they brought up a G-Leaguer I thought it was a desperation move, good on the kid and them for seeing his potential

I Enjoy watching McClung dunk... however as always without the ACTUAL NBA STARS participating it's hard to watch.

I'm not sure why they don't participate do they think they will hurt their brand if they lose? Does it expose them in anyway? I would think not.... I personally wouldn't care.

But he did it after the fact. Thought he was the worst of the dunkers.

Watched him play HS a few times. He had some of the craziest in-game dunks I’ve ever seen. Phenomenal athlete, streaky shooter and volume scorer. If he can ever fine tune his 3 point shot, he will be a good backup PG in the league. Always took a lot of clack for singing his praises here.
Yep, I remember. They said he wouldn’t be anything in college and the guy proceeded to average like 15 for three years.

Because the league has changed . Back in the day the stars were dunkers . Now most of the stars are just shooters .

Only two stars I can think of right now that could do it is Ja Morant and Zion Williamson . Both have said they won’t do it though which is lame . You could probably throw Lebron in there at 38 he could still be entertaining but he should have entered it in his prime and I still think it was a bad look to steal Nate Robinson spotlight by announcing he would enter it next year only to not enter it next year .

This White cat from the G league is killing it. He doesn't look much taller than maybe 6-foot. He is doing things that have never been done before by any of the great dunkers in the past.
Listed 6'2

LJ would have done it had China ordered him to.

6’2 and his head was rim level lol. that would give him like a 46” vertical

That was a really fun watch. When they don’t miss it’s so much better. All the failed attempts kind of take the excitement out of it when they finally do make them.

Hopefully he gets invited next year too.

I saw that. If he is that tall, he sure doesn't look it.
Agreed. He does not look as tall as his listing. José Alvarado looked easily as tall or taller than him when he slapped his hand after one dunk …and Alvarado is only listed at 6’0”.

But that’s quite normal for dudes struggling to make the league to fudge their height a bit. Whatever it takes to to make yourself look more worthy of being signed.

Agree...for him, hopefully he's on a roster next year.

With as many crap teams there are in the NBA, seems like an easy way to sell some tickets by having McClung on the roster.

From what I was able to locate, his vertical is 48". Once going airborne, the impact on his knees upon landing has to be tremendous.

Holy cow those were some impressive dunks. Dude has crazy hang time. I remember in high school he had a rep as a crazy dunker. He went to Georgetown and transferred to Texas Tech.
