WTF? Spitting on a player? Throwing a beer/water bottle? Who does things like that? And, banned for life is a joke. Way too easy to get tickets and who is going to recognize one fan? I say prosecute them, put an assault charge on their record, pay stiff fine in damages and maybe that keeps the idiots at bay.

Is there going to be a shooting or Monica Seles incident next? When did acting completely out of control become the norm?

It's not a fan thing, it's a people thing. Humans have regressed so much in the last 2 - 3 decades. It's honestly embarrassing as a species.
Yeah people suck, but not sure how you can say they suck more today compared to 2-3 decades ago (as fans). I mean I’ve heard my parents tell stories about high school teams bus’s having their tires slit, rocks thrown through their windows and people rocking the bus as the team was trying to leave. The malice at the palace was nearly 2 decades, not sure we’ve had anything quiet that bad since then. This has been going on since the beginning of sports and will last until the end of time.

We’ve watched people burn businesses, assault & murder random people, and set up their own autonomous zones while being downplayed as being mostly peaceful. So everyone is surprised a few idiots throw concession food or spit at players? Throw them in jail, fine them a bunch of money and make it public. It will stop. The same way it would stop if we started castrating sex offenders.

Pretty sure "out of control" was invented in Indiana. :)

"2013, June 30 – During a soccer match in Maranhao, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva ejected Josemir Santos Abreu from the match. This led to a confrontation which ended in da Silva pulling a knife and stabbing Abreu, who would later die from his injuries. Fans rushed the field where they tied up da Silva and ruthlessly beat him and stoned him to death. He was then quartered and decapitated using a sickle and his severed head was placed on a spike on the field."

What the hell. 💀

There’s zero excuse for some of the fan behavior, but some of the players also tend to spur it on with some of their comments and actions. Stop calling fanbases racists and stop disrespecting team logos, etc. It goes both ways.

Ehh, it's become much more common the last few decades. Your link proves that much. Just look at the number of occurrences listed by year. They get a lot more frequent since the 90's and early 2000's. They slit tires when your parents were young, now they just point a gun and shoot or have some physical confrontation that ends up all over social media. See a difference?

I say let the players have a 15 second free run at fans who spit. Then break it up.

My stance shifts a bit on Kyrie. While the fan who threw the water bottle at him needs to be punished.. Kyrie is basically an enemy to the Celtics, started down the "they're racist" path before game 1, and then makes a statement by stepping on the logo.

I stand by my stance that fans shouldn't do these acts thinking there's a barrier to protect him.. but celtics fans do have some legit gripes with Kyrie, and it's hard to feel sorry for him.

The fans who throw popcorn at Westbrook probably don't have much of an issue with him.. which tells me, they were just angry cause he was that night's given opponent.. Celtic fans on the other hand.. I'm not so sure a lot of them wouldn't want to speak to Kyrie in person lol. No love lost.

I would love to see any of these idiots walk up to any player and spit on them outside the arena. We all know what would happen and it wouldn’t be fun for the clowns.

You don’t think there was not far more things happen that was never reported or recorded before social media?

Throwing beer on the opposing team has been going gone for decades. Heck, Philly fans are famous for throwing batteries at baseball and football players. All of this is classless and shouldn't be allowed but it's not new.

This would make officials call the games correctly or risk being stoned to death and not by Cheech and Chong.

No, not to the current level. It's not like the media didn't exist in the 60's 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's. Yet, we have still seen a pretty steady increase in these types of episodes.

If you can't easily identify an increased downward trajectory in human behavior over the last few decades, I strongly suggest seeing an optometrist or otolaryngologist.

I know there was bad behavior for decades. But with the rise of social media and it's built-in anonymity, it seems more and more people are bolder and less concerned about things they say, suggest, endorse. I mean, we're seeing random Asian Americans get coldcocked walking along the street. The boorish behavior in many aspects of society, the violence that was implicitly approved because it was politically expedient, the number of 'keyboard warriors', etc. - I think it's worse. Just about every day there is a random shooting somewhere or a public assault on a random pedestrian or subway rider. Maybe not necessarily in a sports arena as there has often been problems, but, in many other areas of society, it's pretty damn bad. However, if you go to many pro football stadiums wearing the opposing team colors, there will be at least a verbal confrontation, if not worse. Not to mention the number of fans who feel it's necessary to swear like a drunken sailor throughout the game without any concern as to who is around them.

It's quite the stretch to correlate the public protests, etc last summer with fan behavior now.

Willing to bet those two groups disagree on quite a lot.

Streaking and trying to get a smooch from your favorite player is one thing.. but it's clear that there's animosity between a portion of the NBA players and a portion of the fans. Look at this very forum.. how many here are constantly shitting on NBA players (with some good reasons, FWIW). The entitlement of the players, the politics, the rest games and being soft. You give 100 of those fans alcohol, and chances are, someone is gonna do something.

Very interesting to see.. the NBA fans and the players seem to have a large void between them. Don't think I've seen that in any sport ever.

Let the owners ban alcohol from the arenas and the players take the associated pay cut from revenue.

That is if it’s really that big of a deal to the players ;)

Social media along with a few very powerful/influential politicians have normalized violence in our country as long as it is directed at those they have determined "deserve it". It is sad.

I feel like there's no way that the salary cap doesn't drop, and subsequently the player's salaries, with how bad the ratings have been. They've absolutely shot themselves in the foot SEVERAL times. The next TV deal has to be lower, right?

Heh, I don't feel bad for them. Athletes should be treated like humans.. but they are also being paid to perform, and we're the audience. You can always play basketball for free at the playground..

TBH, like most of what I've seen in the last year.. too much entitlement all around. Fans are entitled a bit much, as are players. No one is special.
