I'm curious who is considered the "authority" when it comes to high school rankings for basketball/football etc.

I have seen John Marshall boys basketball team ranked anywhere from #1 to #16 according to various high school ratings sources/publications.

I assume it’s like anything else. You have multiple publications with their own rankings. Not sure who the “go to” would be.

Maxpreps has them #1 but that site doesn't have the best reputation.

ESPN has them #15 but that includes private schools.

Another site had them #3 for just public schools.

The absence of Oak Hill in the ESPN poll is interesting also. Not sure what they have done this year but I can't ever remember a time where they weren't Top 10.

Oak Hill going through transition of coaching change. Signed a top player that caused them to lose 2 other top players due to playing time, and the top player backed out at the end and went to South Carolina. They will be back in short time in 2 years.

USA Today will come out shortly and JM will be top 10 when the first USA Today Super 25 comes out which is usually mid January. ESPNs poll from last week doesn't yet reflect the 2 big wins in Florida. They will be around 10th with the next ESPN poll.
