I can’t wait until student-athletes are told that there’s withholding on their stipends that will go towards PERS… **

Also that the universities have to include more money to add to their PERS contributions… **

Personally I think Miss State should just go ahead and officially hire all student athletes, pay them, make them pay tax, school pay employment tax and provide benefits. Pay them a salary plus scholarship along with bonus for their personal play and on how well the team performs. 40 million a year from the SEC they could make it happen.

Now that we have NIL is there truly much incentive to have non-profitable sports? Women's sports? Can they drop all scholarships and pay players in profitable sports with NIL money? The more expensive it is to have scholarship players, the less incentive there is, especially if there's another mechanism to fund sports like football and basketball

I’ve been curious about the Title IX impact as well. If we’re going to start labeling these kids as university employees which brings all the standard employer/employee legal protocol with it, how in the world could the NCAA enforce title IX any longer?

It seems that they could make suggested demographic targets, but they surely can’t force an employer to hire certain ones.

What they should be doing is establishing NCAA affiliated professional sports leagues for Football and men's basketball and possibly smaller leagues for for men's baseball and possibly hockey. You might could form a professional league for women's basketball or softball or soccer. Everything that is not profitable is turned into a club sport. As expensive as school is now, there is no sense in giving scholarship money to athletes in sports not generating enough money to cover the costs of the sport (including the scholarships). No paid staff for club sports (coaches, trainers, etc) unless it's from private donations earmarked for it. School money can only go to it on the same basis that it goes to other school organizations such as drama club or archeology clulb or whatever exists. So maybe some money for jerseys or equipment or refs, but club sports are largely responsible for raising or paying for their activities just like other student organizations. You could even have three different levels. Professional, semi-amateur (no school money but still NIL), and true amateur.

But to do this, you'd need federal legislation making it clear that it's not a violation of Title IX and also probably some federal legislation setting out rules for establishing some sort of salary cap and/or revenue sharing model for college affiliate professional sports so that they can keep it competitive enough to keep national interest.

Looks like I picked a good time to stop buying season tickets. If I’m going to pay to watch players who get paid to play, I’ll spend my money on Saints, Titans and BAMA**

Or, and hear me out. What if they quit giving scholarships and a monthly living and food stipend and just pay players say a $35k a year salary.

What is better for the player?

A. $35k per year

OR

B. how it is now.

Take a look at the budget
What is our annual revenue?
What are our annual expenses?
How much do you pay football players, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, golf, etc.? All the same? How much? Different amounts? How much?

Wouldn’t be terribly shocked if something like that happened one day… or if it was at least an option. I’m a fan of NIL but I’m not a fan of athletes being considered employees and getting a salary.

And surely they'd be covered under most EEO type considerations considering the overall demographics of our sports teams.

I'm with you here. The day the players are paid by the university (as in a free market) is when I quit being a fan. I'll still watch, but I will cease to be a true fan of MSU. It'll be like NFL/MLB is for me now, i.e. background noise while doing other things. I highly doubt I'll go to any games.

I know 'change' is inevitable but it's just a shame to see spineless leaders allow college sports to simply fall apart.

They have been paying players for years in college football. Nice to get it all out in the open.

We are seeing the gradual demise of college football as we know it. And the current administration is only too happy to accommodate this, particularly when unionization can be used as a platform for facilitating and promoting political messaging (BLM etc). Sure players have been paid and will be paid, but once all players become mere paid free agents, the tradition part of college football will become secondary all too quickly. If you like the NFL, you’ll love college football in 5 yrs. Ok, off my lawn now.

I was in the camp against paying players. Since it is here reward the athletes for the SEC money they help the school earn. It could be merit base. Also it might just cost too much money and undoable.

Title IX is actually a federal law. The NCAA doesn't actually enforce Title IX. It is enforced by the Department of Education. There's more info about it here: https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/inclusion/title-ix-frequently-asked-questions

I'm not sure why there is an attempt to create a minor league NFL when America has shown time after time there is virtually zero appetite for it.

Blame the NCAA. Specifically calling players student-athletes to avoid legal and financial burdens backfired in the long run. Read the whole 9 page release.
This not only further opens Pandora’s Box, it puts a stick of dynamite under it.

Athletes who collaborated extensively on social justice and right-to-play issues were specifically mentioned (#blacklivesmatter and #wewanttoplay)

Collective bargaining for 3 parties (athletes, institutions, and conferences) was not only mentioned, it was encouraged.

Holy flock. Myself and others said it last year. The end of amateur college athletics as we know it is not only a threat, it’s here.

Congratulations, NCAA, your stupid *** opened the door for this.

Congratulations, football and basketball players, you and all athletes now have to fill out timesheets, W-2s, and pay for lawyers and union dues.

This is to try and force colleges to issue W2's instead of 1099's. NIL money will be treated like endorsements, which is 1099. Most Pro athletes get W2's from every state they play a game in.

This is a political shitstorm where the government is trying to leverage the money into their coffers. Looks to me like lawyers and politicians will end up the big winners.

Well now... Austin will no longer be the largest city without a pro team. I don't count the Austin FC since they are not one of the three major sports. They always said they couldn't because it would draw against the college team. Problem solved.

I have told folks forever that they need to put a pro football team between Austin and San Antonio where both cities can claim it. the land between the two on I-35 is expected to be developed within the next 20 years. They could find the land, create a huge area with a stadium and call the team something like the Texas Rattlers or something PC.

And the sportswriters that cover it, are the ones pushing hardest for it to happen. I guess they simply don't enjoy their jobs.

Without tribalism, sports cease to exist. I mean there is really no appetite for MiLB baseball either, outside of simply something to do in medium sized cities.

And why should a player at MSU get paid more than a player at JSU ? ...... This may seem like a reach right now but just get you popcorn and wait. This thing is going to have more sub-plots than an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

I've said it before and will say it again

All this change and attention is going to be a net loss for your average student athlete. Play in return for free tuition, room, and board (and probably some insurance coverage) was a good gig. Now you are going to have to call this compensation? Enjoy taking on debt to foot the tax bill, kids. Your free ride just got expensive. This is a boat they shouldn't have wanted to get rocked. Still better off than paying everything on their own, but not as good as before. And now 3rd parties are going to get their greedy hands in on it with unions making false promises. Going to get messy.

The NIL stuff? Fine with me and is none of my business. That to me is simply making money on your own time. Nothing wrong with that as long as it is kept separate from the traditional school / student athlete relationship. If you can make money off your 500k Instagram followers, more power to you.

I mean if we are paying on merit a player from msu definitely deserves more than a player from JSU.

But merit has no place in a title IX convo.

The government gets its money either way (W2 or 1099). It's just a matter of who they get it from (worker-only or worker+employer).

That's the purpose of Self-Employment Tax.

Yep. The conferences knew the lid was off months ago, and they are trying to get ahead of this type of fallout in the name of conference realignment.

The rich get richer. Despite all the stepchild treatment, MSU is fortunate to be in the SEC.

It honestly pains me to think of what smaller schools, G5, Division II, women’s sports, etc could be facing in the coming years. Just like taxes, the potential “overhead” some institutions and conferences could face will simply be passed along to the consumers: the athletes and the fans.
